Well, these are trying times for our zoo. Some animals are just less expensive to feed.
Isn’t it actually “Petrophaga lorioti”? Not “Ptero”.
Was zum Fuck
Most productive part of the town.
Am from there, can relate.
TIL/HLI about Loriot. Thanks OP!
It looks like he did a lot of different stuff over the years. If anyone has any recommendations for where to start I’d be very grateful 😊
For those not versed in German popular culture:
The “stone louse” is a fictional creature created by the humourist Loriot for a sketch in which he parodied the zoologist Bernhard Grzimek. The sketch included footage of demolitions as examples of the damage caused by these parasites.
The stone louse has since appeared as fictional entries in a couple of genuine reference books — fictional entries are sometimes used as copyright traps. It is also a bit of a running gag among zoologists: as well as the famous stone louse enclosure at Dortmund Zoo, the wildlife park at Pforzheim offers the chance to adopt a stone louse, and in 2011 the city of Zurich published some helpful advice for citizens troubled by stone louse infestations.
The sign in this photo actually contradicts Loriot’s description, claiming that the stone louse feeds on micro-organisms that live on the surface of stones and rocks; in fact, the stone louse feeds on silicates and occasionally iron girders. Also, the sign has a spelling mistake: it gives the scientific name as *Pterophaga lorioti*, but it should be *Petrophaga lorioti* which means “Loriot’s stone-eater”.
