The USA are stuck in their own complexes. Relying on them is a mistake, and more independant EU would only do good for the USA.
Sadly, there are many european countries who don’t seem able to let go daddy US. Probably because they hate France and Germany so much. We must first learn to tolerate and trust each other a bit more. It starts by stop praising everything bad that happens to western european countries. Facing Russia and China starts by working in the EU instead of defying it.
The last thing the US equivalents of Aleksandr Dugin want is a european “partner”. Imagine trying to invade Iraq in that scenario.
A NATO dominated by and run by the US military is good enough for them. Then using for their needs whatever european leaders are desperate for international recognition by following the US’ foreign policies.
I agree with this but to be fair you cannot expect a continent that has neglected its armed forces for decades to immediately rearm so I do get why we are increasing help right now. This seems to mainly be a mindset problem as the most important Western EU countries simply didn’t believe a land war in continental Europe was possible but that is now changing. There were also mismatches in terms of defense priorities between Western and Eastern Europe that needs to be sorted out but if Eastern countries like Poland are also increasing their military capacity that would also work.
No one in their right mind would depend on France or Germany for their defence.
Recent events have justified that position.
eh? We’ve been telling Europe this for a couple decades now. The US doesn’t need convincing, the EU needs convincing. The EU has been talking European army, no dependence on the US, etc, etc, etc till they are blue in the face, not just the flag. And… it’s all been nothing but talk, and an “EU Platoon” or whatever their “army” consists of – nothing that would deter a wimpy motorcycle gang in reality.
The EU must be made into a limited federal government if there is to be an EU Army and protection of freedom and human rights. Because democratic control of such powers must be maintained only an elected EU government and parliament could be alone entrusted with such power. The nation-states, especially France and Germany militarily and economically and Poland and Hungary on matters of democracy and human rights, have shown that keeping national governments in charge invites national chauvinisms and division. Snd those are just prominent country examples. If we Europeans want to act autonomously, the consequence means federation.
Well, Germany and France will need to build up credibility again first after this fuck-up……
It’s tiresome that a stronger European presence in NATO is being equalled to “a better-Armed EU”.
