More than 70% of pubs do not expect to survive winter as energy costs soar

  1. Feels like the Tories want to go for the Jacob trees moggs Dads Blood on the street version of capitalism …

  2. I’m not expecting to be in my job come Spring. The bar I work at gets decent business but not good enough the owner can stump up several thousands of pounds on a whim.

It’s a double whammy with the cost of living increases too. People will be spending less so our profits will be going down whilst our expenses go up (massively).

Joy of joys, I get to deal with the cunts at the job centre….

  3. I work with small businesses. Most of them are completely fucked. One pub went out of contract and their supplier tried to saddle them with a £10k per year standing charge.

  4. Similar story for brewers, particularly small ones. Brewing is an energy intensive process. Lots of boiling and cooling needed.

I’ve heard of some UK brewers facing a 5x increase in energy costs. That’s going to push many over the edge.

  5. Would it be too much to ask for corporate landlords to take a break from hoovering up everyone’s money till we get through this?

Better to be owed rent from a viable business than to have a hundred empty properties.

  6. I’m living this right now, and we’re in a better position than most. Own the freehold, brew our own beer so margins are pretty good, only 3 staff members including myself.

Our electricity and gas bill has gone from £6500 per year to over £22000 per year.

Where’s that extra money coming from? All of our customers are worse off because their bills have gone up too.

And none of this is factoring in any other price rises like raw ingredients.

    Shits fucked.

Edit to say if anyone at all is struggling and needs to talk, message me. I’m here for you.

  7. This is most probably a really silly question, but why can’t the government legitimately stop this happening? Honestly don’t understand who would let that happen for what seems no actual reason but gross profit to the huge detriment to society.

  8. Ive been saying it for a while now.

    This is a land grab.

The rich have siphoned off a shit load of money during the pandemic and now they are doing the same with land.

Push up the price of fuel, gas & electric, the three things that are needed for EVERYTHING and any business making just enough goes bankrupt.

The land, the building they are on becomes vacant, sold & then you either look to build on it or hold onto it for a while.

They don’t want the middle classes owning their own businesses, they want them in line, earning just enough to survive.

Wait until the full effects of brexit come into play and 45-50 hour weeks with minimal holiday will be the norm.

  9. This country sold out years ago. It’s only now we’re beginning to see the real implications come to light.

  10. I can assume all hospitality businesses will be gravely concerned about their customers having no money to use their services.

  11. Imagine if the tories kill off pubs. I bet Wetherspoon is creaming in his pants that’ll be the only place left. Absolute disgrace.

  12. I feel really bad that we in Scotland are probably gonna leave and leave you poor bastards to the tories. That’s if we survive till next year lol

  13. Put the fire on and tell people that as long as they’re drinking in the pub, they don’t need to heat their house.

I mean, it’s literally why we had pubs in the first place…

  14. My local is a Marstons and the landlords are packing up by October. Marston’s been screwing them and regardless they’re working 7 day weeks for a pittance.

Just met the couple who are planning on taking over and Jesus Christ it’s bottom of the barrel. The bloke (whilst referencing his existing debt issues) literally said to me:

    > “Even if it doesn’t work out, I’ve got nothing to lose!”

He then went back inside to talk to his Wife/children.

  15. I hope the shithole at the end of our road is one of them. Its been fucking unbearable since COVID restrictions allowed them to claim the public space outside and turn it into an extension. At least before, the pounding music and angry drunks were somewhat muffled by being inside.
