I can’t take him seriously on this at all. What was the scene that had De Valera wailing Collins’ name which, if memory serves, happened just before it was carried out, all about then?
Admittedly it’s been a few years since I’ve seen the film but I remember that scene clearly and it’s what caused people to think that he *was* implying that. How else are we meant to take that scene?
Honestly that film in general is a bit shite. Historically inaccurate with Julia Roberts in it for no reason other than to appeal to the market. I don’t think it has aged particularly well. Laced in that 90s cheesiness. Wind That Shakes The Barley is the best film in terms of accuracy and feel.
I’m too young to remember but what was the general public’s view of Dev before the film came out? He’s a pretty wildly hated figure by a lot of people in Ireland nowadays, not without good reason, but I wonder how much of the perception of him is due to the film.
