Yes, Mr. Gove, The Experts Were Right About Brexit

  1. TL;DR: Rant and screed, ignore if you wish, about populism and “are we the baddies” and how it motivates people. In short, philosophical and technical and economical arguments against Brexit are useless, they just play to the audience here.

The trouble with articles like these, is that they’re just going to fall on deaf ears.

Anyone with an ounce of common sense knew Brexit was going to be a costly, painful, and largely stupid idea before it even happened. People (Remainers) shouted it from the rooftops. In here and other places.

Anyone else, of the Brexit True Believers, didn’t care anyway. And are highly unlikely to read this. And even if they did, they wouldn’t care.

Much was made of the Brexit bus, arguments were had back and forth. But Brexit is not, and never was, an economical decision. None of them care one shit about the bus.

It was a movement founded on emotion. And now with Covid, spiralling inflation, and immigrants crossing the channel in shitty little boats you’ve got the perfect storm to whip up hatred and bile amongst a bunch of voters that are so blind to everything else that the economical cost, the hardship, is no longer the point if it ever was.

I don’t mean to disparage this sub, but we can be a bit blind to this sometimes and lack understanding of why, and for what reasons people vote for the likes of Farage, and Boris, or May.

We see this as non-sensical because why would any sane, rational person vote to harm themselves? They wouldn’t. But that’s because the people you are arguing against aren’t acting on rational thought or logic. The arguments made in this piece may find favour amongst those already opposed to Brexit, but everyone else will just ignore it.

It’s a point of human nature I suppose. On the plus side you can motivate people to great things. Like the Battle of Britain or surviving the Blitz. In similar circumstances, the people took a stand against Nazi hegemony over Europe, no matter the cost, and at great hardship and that is generally a positive for the World at Large and the UK specifically.

More neutrally the same thing happened in Napoleon’s day. British people were deprived, pressed into the Navy, etc and survived through a great deal amount suffering. Although the benefits here are more debatable.

Similarly, and here I’d have to Godwin myself. The people at the Nuremburg rallies were similarly motivated. Just with more clearly defined “bad” ends.

People aren’t really motivated by what’s “best” for them financially, they are motivated by what they feel.

  2. I’m a massive believer that the current economic crisis and incoming inflation sunami could have been mitigated significantly had we remained in the EU. Brexit was one (of a few) triggers that propelled us on this trajectory that the government won’t own or talk about.

  3. Which I am sure he knew. Gove is inept but he is not stupid and knew that leaving the EU would come with a huge economic risk attached. I will grant him the fact that COVID and the war in Ukraine could not have been predicted but the MPs pushing for Brexit would have understood the worst case scenarios put forward by experts, they still went ahead with it because they knew they could benefit from Brexit at the expense of the country.

  4. Remember that back 2016 it was OUT OF QUESTION for the Leave camp to exit SM and CU… Absolute rats.

I am surprised that they still can walk the streets.
