5G wars: the US plot to make Britain ditch Huawei

  1. Interesting read. I didn’t know that the Huawei kit had passed GCHQ scrutiny “There was a lot of media speculation and parliamentary interest in whether we would ban Huawei or not,”’ said Darroch. “In my time, GCHQ had led on detailed analysis about the risk from Huawei kit on the communications network and had concluded that, provided it was not at the core of the network, it was OK. This analysis was a central part of the discussion at the national security council and key to the then-agreed outcome that Huawei equipment could be used in certain parts of the network. It was basically driven by the analysis of GCHQ . . . It would be legitimate to do it [drop Huawei] for political reasons, or because it was so important to the Americans, or as an expression of Five Eyes solidarity, or whatever. But it shouldn’t be dressed up as technical.”

  2. Call me radical and all, but I think British utilities and infrastructure should be British owned (preferably publicly owned) as far as practically possible.

  3. Astonishing the number of comments who seem to be happy ro be ruled from Washington.

I mean considering all the *talk about sovereingty* when it comes to cooperating with our friends and neigbours who actually treated us as equals there’s a big gaping hole here..

  4. Yep, stop using it, get it made by uk companies, even if it costs more, because it’s not made by a foreign totalitarian dictatorship, which is subsidised by low labour costs, low safety standards and an artificially low Chinese currency.

I would happily pay more for my phone for British jobs.

  5. I don’t think being self-sufficient in matters of national infrastructure should be seen as a ‘plot’ or somehow undersirable

Seems crazy to me that so much vital infrastructure is in foriegn hands from trains to power companies and now 5G.

Its also naive to think there are not backdoors in Huawai devices, although we do know that US tech. has backdoors too.
