‘Serious problem’ if France and UK can’t tell if they are friends or enemies, says Macron

  1. Emmanuel Macron has suggested France and Britain may be heading for “serious problems” after Liz Truss told the penultimate Conservative leadership hustings that “the jury is still out” on whether the French president was “friend or foe”.

Asked for his response to the remarks, Macron, on an official visit to Algeria, said it was “not good to lose your bearings. Words have a meaning: friend, foe.”

If he was asked the same question, he said: “I wouldn’t hesitate for a second.”

“France is a friend of the British people,” Macron said. “If France and Britain cannot say whether they are friends or enemies … then we are headed for serious problems.”

  2. I think Truss had a point; there’s precious little that’s happened in the last few years to show that Macron is a friend to the UK. Looking past his current platitudes, actions speak louder than words and it wasn’t very long ago that he was threatening to cut power to the Channel Islands over a fishing dispute. The Guardian have obviously taken the French view, as it’s the default anti-Tory position, and have not bothered to speculate what may be behind Truss’ statement.

  3. You would have thought Macron would have learnt from the last one thousand years. Plus the way he’s acted lately I would check my fingers once he shook my hand. France/England have a love hate relationship we love each other in a way but we’ll never trust each other.

Britain will always have France’s back but we are like siblings that squabble.

  4. Tell you what.. Thank god for Macron. Germany is introverted, Spain is in it’s own world, Italy is unable to not be in crisis, UK is in becoming like its newspapers, the only one who seems to speak for Europe is Macron

  5. How did the U.K. get to the point where we will probably have this awful woman as PM.

Please roll on the next general election so we can finally have a chance to remove the Tory party. ..

  6. Brit here. To all our European friends please please please don’t think that our cunty, idiotic and divisive leaders speak for us. We want nothing more than to be part of the international community and love our friends in France, Spain and Germany. Sadly our current political party in power has taken a dive to the right and alienating everyone including us – the working people of the U.K. we currently don’t see a way out, please pray for us!

  7. Macron is sugarcoating it, not just the PM, but the entire British media are very adversarial towards France and to a lesser extent the EU.

  8. I think this sounds like a misunderstanding.

She said she didn’t know if Macron is a friend.

Macron said France is a friend of the British people no matter its leader.

They are basically saying the same thing. The difference is she is in the middle of an election and it’s a huge political issue the border crossing dispute.
