An Irish hero of the 20th century, Michael Collins is also a beacon for Ireland in the 21st century. He guided our path to independence, sought to avoid civil war and helped to make possible the Ireland we live in today. Today we honour him.

  1. > sought to avoid civil war

That’s a bizarre take given he’s the man that started it

  2. Collins was the person who started the civil war on order from the British Government. The Brits even gave him the guns to do it.

  3. Where does Leo stand on the evidence that Collins wanted to continue arming and supporting the IRA campaign in the six counties? At what point does the assassination of spies and informers become unjustified in Irish history? And if it is a matter of ‘democratic’ legitimacy would Leo go on to condemn his participation in the Rising?

  4. I actually find it offensive the way Varadker is opting this part of our history and reframing it. I’m no shinner but the spin he’s putting on this is leaving a bad taste in my mouth

  5. Having a west brit like Varadker try and claim solidarity with Michael Collins would have given Collins chronic diarrhea! Varadker is the antithesis of what Michael Collins stood for and Varaker would look down that shneery nose of his at Michael Collins were he around today.

Like let’s not kid ourselves, if we’re laying money down on the role Varadker would have played in the tan war, fair chance it’s an informer.
