Schoolgirl, 9, shot dead in her home as gunman on the run

  1. Under the Tories police recorded violent crime has risen from circa 600k to 2.1m. And yet we barely hear a thing about it in the media. More failure from the tough talkers.

  2. Maybe now all those anti-Khan idiots will understand it’s a **systemic** issue, to do with Tory policy and cuts – nothing to do with London mayor since clearly it starts to happen in more and more cities.

  3. Liverpool has always had violent crime and gang issues which had been well managed over recent years but since 2020 there have been a lot of ‘drive by shootings’ where doors have been deliberately targeted as warnings.

However in the past 7 days there have been 3 murders by shooting in the city. A 22 year old last week, a 28 year old on Sunday and now a 9 year old last night. The latter two sound like people caught up in crossfire but you cannot mess about with guns, people will get hit. I would suggest these are gang related, given their locations in the city, and who knows if they’re directly related or not, but it’s always been difficult for Merseyside police to catch gang culprits for a multitude of reasons. The city is a mess right now in terms of violent crime.

  4. Rhys Jones (11 years old) was shot and killed on 22 August 2007 only a stones throw from here.

It’s very sad that *exactly 15 years later, to the day*, another child has been gunned down.

The police brought Sean Mercer to justice and they’ll do the same for whichever coward is responsible for this one.

  5. Naturally the discussion here is all about the tories, because of course this guy definitely wouldn’t be doing the same thing on Labour’s watch!

  6. Next time you’re reading a debate between US citizens about the first amendment, just remember that this story is headline, national news (and probably will be for weeks)

This might not even make local news bulletins in some US cities

  7. Am I right in thinking Liverpool has a lot of incidents of very young people being shot or stabbed? Thinking back to Rhys Jones, but also the girl from several months ago. Does Liverpool have an unusually high number of guns?

Not trying to hate on Liverpool, been there plenty.
