Newly built lethal Dublin intersection goes against international best practices

  1. I feel totally indifferent towards this, being almost murdered by incompetent drivers is relatively familiar territory for any cyclist

  2. Is this the design they came up with, when they decided that they knew better than the Dutch?

  3. “Best ‘International’ practice. But where has that been tried in Ireland?” — Every county engineer and planner.

  4. Jesus those GoPro cycle lads always sound like absolute feckin eejits.

But yes i agree that junction is desperate.

  5. As much as some people might say oyherwise, cyclists a d motorists in Dublin (cant speak for the rest of the country) have actually got a very good rapport/communication. And it’s a relief when you see some of the utter death traps DCC put up like this around the city.

It’s genuinely hard to look at that and put it down to incompetence rather than contempt or just not giving a shite. You have to wonder how whomever made it has a job at all.

  6. Flashing amber arrow: **you may proceed in the direction of the arrow but only if it is safe to do so, and you must yield if other traffic is approaching.** The driver is at fault, nothing to do with a dangerous layout or cycling or Dublin City Council! Learn the rules of the road before taking a bike or vehicle onto the public road.

  7. Unless they have a green arrow light to turn right, I don’t think it’s the lights that are the issue, the drivers should treat this as any other junction, if you’re trying to turn and any traffic is crossing the junction (car or bicycle), you wait until it’s clear to turn. Seems like the poster mentioned a flashing amber light which should also be a hint to exercise caution and wait for it to be clear before turning.

  8. Lol! Just like the new cycle lane on Grange road in Rathfarnham. The one that just ABRUPTLY stops in the middle of the road. It’s an absolute farce.

  9. Across Europe there are things such as Turn Right on Red, roundabouts where you’re allowed to take an outside lane and take any exit etc as well as junctions with only two phases such as traffic going up-down and left-right including pedestrians where cars need to stop for pedestrians if they are turning. Why is Ireland as well as the UK so different on those rules compared to the rest of Europe?

  10. I drove through this on my Bus driving test, it’s fucking lethal, no other word for it. Same goes for the other ones that are being built around finglas and fingal as a whole. It’s never a good idea to have traffic crossing over a cycle lane, but one of them up around DCU literally has the traffic making a right turn THROUGH a cycle lane…

In a car that’s not the biggest thing in the world, but there’s quite a few busses and trucks that run through there, it’s only a matter of time before someone eats a lump of scania

  11. That’s more so down to people just ignoring the flashing amber light and not teating it like a yield than a design issue. Happens more times than I care to count at many junctions that is done.
