The methodology used for determining this figure is surveying “business leaders” for what their opinion of the road quality in each country is. This study does not take into consideration any actual metrics, such as paved and marked road per head of population, maintenance level, safety, overall penetration of high quality motorways etc.
Obviously it cannot be normalised as it is based on opinions, so what German people consider as good could be vastly different to Spanish people.
In reality, are Irish, Italian and Norwegian roads on par? I don’t think so, I think Norwegian roads are far ahead of Irish ones, Italy probably only matches in the North.
Our road quality has improved a good bit though, I remember when I first started driving in 2007 it was fuckin awful everywhere.
I’ve driven through Belgium, there is no fucking way we are on a level as bad as Belgium.
>But the pot hole ridden one lane culchie roads that no one likes are supposed to be like that!!!!!!!
>What do you actually expect? Our government to put our tax money to good use and not just pocket it?

There are 20.9km of Asphalt surfaced road in Ireland for every 1000 people, this makes Ireland the 2nd most road dense nation on the planet.
Which roads? Ireland has more road per capita than pretty much anywhere else in the world. I mean, if boreens and bog roads are being included we never had a chance.
Ireland motorways are top of the range.
The motorways, HQDC, and majority of N roads are perfectly decent. Most of the dual carriageways should be motorways to be honest.
Then you get the utter shite such as Manor Street – Parnell St – Mall in Waterford city. The never ending roadworks on the roundabout by Jack Lynch tunnel in Cork, or anywhere in Wexford.
You’d think the councils would sort it out but they’re too busy filling pockets instead of potholes.
Most of our roads are good, I’d say the low score is due to the large amount of rural areas we have where the road is extremely narrow and poorly maintained.
