What are these used for, on dining table? (I am travelling near Austrian German border)

  1. Some restaurants have a small trash bowl. That would be my first guess.
However it could also be a bowl for cutlery and napkins but they forgot to refill. Those are a bit taller usually, so I don‘t think this is it.

Edit: Just saw cutlery next to it. I suppose it‘s the first OR it‘s for a candle to put inside, but it doesn‘t look typically made for that either. Probably trash…?

  2. Important difference is – if it has 2 handles or only one:

    ***2 Handles: Soup pot/bowl***

***1 Handle only*** (looks like a hugh tea cup): then it was a “***Nachtscherben***” or “***Nachttopf***”, which means it was a pot for the small business during the night (to make the context: in the past the flats didn’t had the toilett inside (only on the stairway one for multiple flats), there for people used this nightpots to avoid getting dressed and outside of the flat).

  3. Can be for various reasons:

During breakfast it can be used as trash.

Other times you will just find cuttlery in it.

Since you are at the german austrian border this type of bowl is usually used for serving “Weißwürste” in hot water.

  4. You’re supposed to spit your food into it if you don’t like it. Restaurants can only legally empty it once a week. So it’s an indicator of quality. An empty mug means good quality.
