Light pillars in Tampere, Finland due to ice crystals in air, reflecting city lights

  1. If someone is still wondering about light pollution: there’s a layer of pristine white snow reflecting everything shot downwards back to sky. Yes, lighting engineers are very aware of how to align lights but they have no control over mother nature. Besides it’s okay to have at least some light when the day is so short.

And those light pillars do not need to be on top of those lights. It’s enough the atmospheric conditions are right somewhere between the observer and the light source. There’s ice crystals like tiny flat mirrors that are floating in the air and reflecting the light that would pass over your head back down to your eyes.
