For years now @dublincycling has been telling @DubCityCouncil and the NTA (@TFIupdates) that their invented “protected junction” design is dangerous. They are proposing 200 of these in @BusConnects. They should follow international practice. But they know best apparently

It’s mad how you can tell how sanctimonious the cyclist is by listening to him for just ten seconds.
Jesus, that design is crackers. Must be based on the assumption that cyclists will watch out for cars crossing over and yield in time. Bit cavalier about safety.
That just looks like motorists not understanding what a flashing Amber means.
They’ve installed a junction sorta like this on Griffith Ave/Ballymun Road/Mobhi Road in Dublin and they’re terrifying for all involved. The one they installed there even has a contra flow bike lane through the junction though at least the light sequence makes some sense (when pedestrian if green all else is red, and I think cyclists going the contra direction also have a filter) but someone will be knocked down and injured there it’s only a matter of time
DCC Strategy seems to just involve putting those plastic bollards everywhere.
I always feel like the lads who design “safe cycling” infrastructure haven’t actually been on a bike most of the time.
Could say the same for our public transport too…
I live beside this and it’s a horrible junction for everyone
Is it just the light sequence that’s wrong or what should the layout be?
If I’m not mistaken, Dublin City Council is hell-bent on destroying Dublin City and making it a thoroughly unliveable place.
I’m not sure I agree with this tweet. In other European countries (Denmark and Germany for certain), the pedestrians and cyclists travelling parallel to the road on green also have green to cross the road, and any drivers have to wait for the pedestrians to be finished crossing before turning through the junction. The issue seems to be that Irish drivers are dickheads who aren’t watching for anything other than cars, more than the junction itself.
I go through that junction regularly in Ballymun, it’s a matter of time till someone is seriously hurt. Also the junction is so tight buses struggle to turn left and come very close to cars approaching from that direction to turn right. Its a terrible design, mostly for the cyclists and buses they are trying to encourage.

That looks like a mess alright. Maybe the driver will get used to it in time once we have 200 hundred of the..
How many accident swill we have before then though.
What would @dublincycling advise them to do at this junction and others like it.
I’d be interested to see an alternative design thay is in lone with international practise and how it would work better.
Can we have a few more cycle lanes that aren’t also the bus lane? Never feels safe with the bus right on your tail
But a Flashing Amber means “you may proceed **only** if it is safe to do so and, if appropriate, yield to other traffic” surely? The motorist is in the wrong (if they proceed) and not the design. Flashing Amber lights have been in use on other junctions for years and have nothing to do with Dublin City Council. Educate the motorist and don’t shoot the messenger!
Got a wierd one on west of kilmacaud road, awful layout coming from goatstown to beacon.
Also what’s with using that red grit surface, feels like my wheels going slide out on it
Wonder how much consultants were paid for their contributions to this
