Confused cashier just handed me back my 20 Euro and and extra 2 for the cans I bought. I just got paid 2 Euro to take some cans out of the supermarket. Should I feel bad?

  1. I mean it’s €2 but your going to cause the lad stress as he recounts the float again and again trying to figure out what transaction he fucked up on

  2. I would feel bad now and give it back. I used to work in retail and the managers would go through us when the till was short.

  3. It’s a lack of canniness by the cashier, not your fault. But if you had the opportunity and the decency to give back the extra change once you noticed the mistake, you should have done so.

  4. Nope you shouldn’t, I work as a manager in retail and it will just be used as a learning experience for the cashier, they will get told to pay more attention to what they are doing and nobody will get fired or have their wages docked for it.

  5. In college I was broke and I smoked. I used to buy my cigs on a Sunday night for the week. A new girl was being trained in and she gave me my 20 back and change when I bought them. 20 years later I still feel guilty about stealing that 20 from a small business owner. Shop wasn’t there long and by the time I had enough money that I could pay them back they were gone. Having an extra 20 punts that week was AMAZING as I could go out and eat better but I still feel guilty about keeping it to this day.

  6. Personally I’d go back tomorrow and admit. 20 quid doesn’t get far these days but the gesture will.

  7. Went to the local Chinese, 22.30 for what we ordered. Got a notification 10 mins later showing that I’d only paid 2.30. Take it as it comes if the roles were reversed they’d do the same.

  8. You should have went back in. I’ll never forget the memory of my hard working mam come home
in tears because she was reprimanded as her till was short. It affected her for a long time.

  9. If you go back, make sure you go to the same person. If you start to explain the situation to someone else, especially the manager, you can get the person making the mistake in serious trouble.

  10. If you bought it from a major corporation like Tesco or Aldi, then fuck it, corporate can afford the loss. I went to the store to buy a few packs of cider not too long ago, and the fella at the till rang me up for three cans instead of three packs. You’d better believe that I asked him to add a few more on there and then went back to clean out the case.

  11. The people saying to give it back honestly is baffling… yes the cashier will be given out to for the till shortage, but its likely not the first time and certainly wont be the last time. I worked retail for 2 years (greedy uber-profitable foreign chain, red logo 🫣) and till shortages were essentially an every day occurrence. If it was off by a lot you got told off obviously but it forced you to pay more attention and get better at counting cash quickly and accurately.

If OP brings the money back, its not as if the cashier’s manager will get down on their knees and apologise, absolving them of all guilt. Odds are they won’t even hear about it and will still be scrutinised for every little mistake they make. Bringing the money back benefits no one other than the chain. I was berated over till shortages countless times when I worked that job and if I went in now and got handed a free 20 quid I’d be out the door in 2 seconds flat.
