I moved to donabate awhile ago to rent and ended up buying in rush. It’s a decent commute to town and to see my family/friends but I much prefer out here to finglas (where I’m from)….I think WFH is a game changer to ppl willing to move away from being around the corner to mammy.
I got absolutely lucky though. Saved me hole off n bought just before lockdown. So grateful for that. looking now and I’d prob be heading further than Balbriggan for my price range.
I’m surprised it’s that low.
The more people that want to live in an area, the more expensive it is.
We can’t all live in Dalkey, like.
Ridiculous, two third living in fantasy land where all their wishes are granted.
I ended up in Donegal in 2019 from Tipp originally. I love it up here but eh, I don’t know anyone.
We could allocate 75% of affordable rental apartments to tenants who are actually from the area – this would also kill off NIMBY-ism as people want their kids to be able to afford to live near them.
We should get rid of income caps for affordable rental also, and ensure security of tenure.
And finally we should also ensure each apartment block has a proper income mix (20% high income, 60% medium income and 20% low income – the last one would cover pensioners also), like they do in Amsterdam and Vienna and where crime is lower than Dublin.
The above system in Vienna is paid for via rent, plus a 1% tax on all paycheques (renters and non-renters). The upside for everyone (again renters and non-renters) is a more pleasant city, and businesses can open later as staff often live close to their job.
If we fix housing we fix everything and I think the Vienna Model is the solution.
Well the reality is that their chosen community don’t want them living there. Look at all the objections to any new housing ( including from politicians who feign outrage over the housing crisis).
You get to live in a community you can afford…. end of discussion.
Buy in a different community you can afford
It sucks. I have family members who’ve left the country because they couldn’t afford to buy a house where they wanted.
What under-35 year old CAN afford that?!
That’s a shame, I want to live in a 5 bed in Portobello but earn 28k a year.
Outrageous, why would the government do this to me?
Really thought would be higher than that, especially in Dublin these days
The thing that wrecks my head is I can’t buy a plot of land 8 minutes up the road because its another village and I’m not from that parish or gaa club so I can’t build there.
Walking distance from my house for my own forever home but investment funds from every other country can buy up entire estates. If I want to move anywhere in the country I should be allowed, if they want to stop rich dubs taking rural villages make it ban second homes in rural communities or make it prohibitively expensive but for fuck sake why can’t I move to rural kerry? I like it there.
