Economists Say Life Is Going to Be More Expensive Forever, Sorry

  1. That’s clearly false because capitalism demands competition meaning that prices will fall rapidly as soon as company costs fall.

What do you mean that hasn’t happened in almost a 100 years?? But, capitalist competition…..

  2. This article is actually just saying that deflation won’t happen and presenting it as some ground breaking revelation.

  3. This is something of a ‘no duh’ statement.

Prices go up, but they don’t come down again. Negative inflation is *very* rare historically, and usually happens when in a deep recession or depression.

  4. Infinite growth is not possible with finite resources. The Tories will not admit it but capitalism is going to fail at some point in the future because we are consuming faster than a plague of locusts. The last century or so has been a blip in human history and we are set to revert to the way it was before all that, with most of the world’s wealth in the hand of a small number of individuals.

  5. As someone who has been on this planet since the 70s, I’ve noticed that prices always go up in various crises, but they never once go down when things go back to normal. Or indeed when there is a glut.

  6. This whole article seems to be built around the idea that prices don’t come down after a period of inflation.

That’s not exactly news, and it’s not even what the central bankers (or most people who understand economics) want to happen. After a period of inflation, we should probably want to see prices stabilise (ie. very low inflation) with wages rising to make thins more affordable rather than wanting to see deflation (which causes its own problems).

(There are exceptions to this of course – in particular tech goods often become much cheaper over time. But I’m talking about the overall level of prices across the economy and the value of money)

Prices don’t come down again after a long period of inflation or a short sharp period of inflation. But things can become more affordable again!
