Due to an influx of posts regarding quarantine regulations, let’s consolidate all the posts and questions here.

This sub will institute a moratorium on covid-related questions that relate to immigration (visiting, working, family reunification, etc…) and all posts will be deleted and directed to this post. This is to avoid posting incorrect information or information that is correct at the time of posting, but is quickly incorrect as the rule change *frequently*.

**So You Want to Travel During a Pandemic:**

***Please consider not traveling***. Seriously, please consider not only your own health and safety, but the health and safety of others as well. Postpone your travel if you can. Come here when it’s safe and we’re all vaccinated and healthy. It’ll be a heck of a lot more fun here in Norway when we’re not in the middle of a pandemic.

But if you must travel, please read the following pages for up-to-date information about rules and regulations and quarantine procedures.

[Helse Norge](https://www.helsenorge.no/en/coronavirus/international-travels/)

[UDI’s information page](https://www.udi.no/en/about-the-corona-situation/)

[Norwegian Institute of Public Health](https://www.fhi.no/en/op/novel-coronavirus-facts-advice/facts-and-general-advice/entry-quarantine-travel-covid19/)

[Norwegian Government’s page](https://www.regjeringen.no/en/topics/foreign-affairs/reiseinformasjon/travel_coronavirus/id2691821/)

[Visit Norway’s page on covid-19](https://www.visitnorway.com/plan-your-trip/coronavirus-and-travelling-to-norway/)

[A recent post from someone in a quarantine hotel](https://www.reddit.com/r/Norway/comments/kayvlu/im_currently_in_the_quarantine_hotel_heres_some/)

Please note: ***the rules change constantly!*** What is true today may not be true tomorrow; however, the pages appear to be updated frequently so if you must travel, be prepared for the rules to change.

Still not sure if you can travel to Norway? [Try taking this test](https://www.helsedirektoratet.no/english/corona/quarantine-and-testing-in-norway-these-rules-apply-to-you) from the public health institute to determine your status. It’s short and will give you the most up-to-date information.

Still have questions not answered by those pages? Chances are good they cannot be answered (accurately) here. Ask the officials, not reddit.

Got a useful link I forgot? Post it and I’ll update.

Update #1: This is not a thread for finding out how to circumvent the covid restrictions. If you are looking for ways to avoid a covid hotel, if you are looking to ignore the rules set up, if you’re thinking about taking a risk and ignoring the rules or lying about where/why you’re traveling: ***STAY HOME. DO NOT COME IF YOU’RE NOT WILLING TO FOLLOW THE RULES.***

Update #2: as of 27/1/2021, the government has introduced [stricter rules for foreign nationals entering Norway.](https://www.regjeringen.no/en/aktuelt/norway-introduces-its-strictest-entry-rules-since-march-2020/id2830390/) This includes imposing restrictions on EEA/EU citizens and limiting the free movement of persons.

>The following groups of people no longer have access to the country:
>
>foreign nationals residing in the EEA and EEA nationals residing in third countries (unless covered by exemptions that also apply to third-country nationals);
>
>family members apart from nuclear families in which the children are minors, for both EEA nationals and others, meaning that grandparents, adult children, parents of adult children and romantic partners may no longer visit;
>
>foreign nationals from countries outside the EEA who are granted a residence permit in connection with work or study, including as a seasonal worker or student;
>
>a foreign national who is to work with film or series production or as a researcher who is exempt from the requirement of a residence permit.

The current rules for people that are legally allowed to enter Norway must abide by the following conditions:

>*requirements of a negative coronavirus test result prior to arrival in Norway, registration of each traveller’s purpose for entering and intended place of quarantine, mandatory testing at the border and legally mandated quarantine.*

Update #2: Rules as of May 2021 and applicable until 1 July 2021.

>The following people ******cannot****** *enter Norway (applies to all foreign nationals, including citizens of the EU/EEA and the Nordic countries):*
>
>*tourists (with a few exceptions)*
>
>*more distant family, such as grandparents*
>
>*romantic partners or fiancés*
>

>

>
>*business travellers*
>
>*foreign nationals holding a Schengen visa but who are not included among the exemptions below*

The following are exempt the above list of restrictions:

>*foreign nationals who reside in Norway*
>
>*foreign nationals who reside in countries/areas that are not subject to a duty to quarantine (“yellow countries”).*
>
>*foreign nationals who have a family immigration permit*
>
>*foreign nationals who are visiting or will be staying with close family members in Norway*
>
>*foreign nationals who are arriving for a contact visit with their children*
>
>*foreign nationals for whom there are special reasons for granting entry, such as special care responsibilities for people in Norway or other compelling compassionate grounds*

>
>*people belonging to certain professions*
>
>*journalists*
>
>*maritime and aeronautical personnel*
>
>*freight and passenger traffic*
>
>*diplomats and military personnel*
>
>*Sami people engaged in reindeer husbandry*
>
>*researchers and crew on a marine research cruise*
>
>*foreign nationals invited by the Norwegian authorities and employees of international organizations.*
>
>*foreign nationals in transit at an airport in Norway (both international airport transit and within the Schengen area)*
>
>*foreign nationals working in critical societal functions*
>
>*health workers from Sweden and Finland working in Norwegian health and care service*
>
>*foreign nationals with permanent residence on Svalbard or who need to travel via the Norwegian mainland on their way to or from their work or place of residence on Svalbard*

If you are not one of the exempted people, you are currently now allowed to visit or travel to Norway.

Update #3: The current guidelines for entry into Norway still remain more or less intact. Please consult the links above to see who is allowed to enter, what documentation you’ll need to enter, and what is required of you once you enter the country.

If you need help getting your vaccine certificate recognized for entry into Norway, you can see the [FHI website’s](https://www.fhi.no/nyheter/2021/na-kan-du-fa-etterregistrert-koronavaksiner-tatt-utenfor-norge/?fbclid=IwAR24CR5X2xl0dFxzd4tx1DEdUQEYweoadcIXdr2jZszpP3ZpXGChMA2NOxE) guidelines for those with Norwegian national ID numbers. For those from third-countries, please [consult this page](https://ec.europa.eu/info/live-work-travel-eu/coronavirus-response/safe-covid-19-vaccines-europeans/eu-digital-covid-certificate_en?fbclid=IwAR1ZyCQjhxmCSEFuEt8P6d15ZfkqQqHfwGxmwb_R5QIgg0yLOArQSkT6M2k#recognition-of-covid-certificates-from-third-non-eu-countries). Currently, Norway only recognizes covid vaccinations that are approved by the EMA and only covid vaccination certificates from the EU/EEA/Schengen/UK regions.

  1. This is super helpful for anyone moving during a pandemic, not fun. not all companies let you work across international borders or people are joining partners. Honestly it’s better living here too.

  2. So, you would like to spend theese unprecedented times in the beatifull kingdom of Norway? Here are some tips and tricks for you to navigate the current situation:

    1: Stay the fuck home.

  3. Do you think the vaccine will be mandatory? I’m in Denmark and assume Norway and Denmark will have the same policy. Hopefully I can get back to the US without being forced to take this shit before a flight.

  4. Hey there everyone!
I’ve arrived in Norway a week ago on the 15th, from the UK via Amsterdam. (Landed in Oslo, took the train down to quarantine hotel in Kristiansand.) (I’m moving here to be with my fiancé due to Brexit, I know the timing isn’t grand.) Currently on day 6 of my quarantine hotel stay due to how travel worked out, and received a text message last night at 20:23 about an update on the Corona situation today from the Norwegian Directory of Health.
    https://www.helsenorge.no/en/coronavirus/international-travels/

They’re requesting that if you’ve arrived within Norway within the last 14 days to immediately take a PCR test, and to take a new PCR test no sooner than day 7 after arrival from the United Kingdom.

Now, my big question as it stands; how exactly does a traveller with no Norwegian documents book a Covid test in Norway?

My fiancé has been translating stuff for me as my current grasp of Norwegian isn’t great yet, but even he can’t find any way for me to book a test.

This online booking service has been the closest thing we’ve found, however I don’t possess “BankID or MinID”, and the book for somebody feature is only for people with legal stewardship of them. We’ll be trying to call them up when the phone line opens today, but I’ve had very little luck in finding official resources to help with this.

If anyone has any advice on what to do here, that would be fantastic!

  5. So, I am US citizen and my girlfriend lives in Norway. We had big plans at the end of January. Proposal kind of plans. I was going to stay with her for two months. Ticket purchased and everything. We can fit the duration requirement of over 9 months on our relationship but we have not been able to meet up physically yet.

How strict is that physical requirement and do they look into it? Should I have her meet me in another country and fly in together or is the self declaration just a “scout’s honor” kind of thing since I won’t need a visa? In that case do I just say “yes we have met before”?

  6. I was hoping to head over in Feb , been planning to stay for few months for a while now.

Given how everything is still too fucky I’m going to stay at home and wait.

But I can’t wait to safely pop over to Norway again. Thanks for taking the time to share these links.

  7. thank you so much for compiling this! I have to move to norway for a new job in february and am in full panic mode, really didnt want this during a pandemic. having all this together here helps a lot!

  8. I was wondering where I could get a PCR test in Norway that would guarantee me a fast enough result for it to be valid to return to my country of residence, so 72 hours. I presume this would not fall under the free testing i’ve seen being provided by the government, so any knowhow on where I can get one?

  9. Hey guys!
Does anyone know (yet) how they might or will handle tourism in the summertime? My boyfriend and I bought tickets for a festival in 2019 which was postponed to 2021. It will be held one hour from Oslo in August this year. We are from Germany and planned to either take a car and ferry from Hirtshals (Denmark) or take a plane to Oslo and then rent a car. Will it be enough to have a negative covid test not older than 48 hours or is it mandatory to go into quarantine for 2 weeks even with a negative test?
And what about the vaccine? It seems our chances are very low to get it till summer since we are neither old, working in hospitals /schools etc, nor are we risk patients.
So chances are pretty slim. My best guess is winter 2021 lol.
Sorry if someone already asked this I couldn’t find anything like this specifically. And I know, none of you can peek into the future but maybe soem of you might have some informations regarding my question.
    Would be awrsome.

Thanks in advance and stay healthy everyone.

  10. I am to fly out to Norway tomorrow morning. When filling out the entry registration it requires an address for where I will be doing my quarantine. I will need to do so at a quarantine hotel but the rules say the municipality/police will arrange the hotel so how am I supposed to know the address?

I am under the assumption that I was required to fill out the registration prior to travel. I’m confused. Am I supposed to wait until I am at the airport to fill out my registration?

  11. If I want to help my partner move from Norway to UK in late march, have the procedures changed?

So far all I see is that I must take covid 19 tests before and after visit to norway from Uk, and can put my quarantine address as place to stay upon return to UK.

The whole trip will be under a week.

  12. Does anyone here know if they force you to hotel quarantine immediately upon entering Norway? Or can one make an additional flight within the country? For example, if I landed at Gardermoen, could I then fly to Bergen and hotel quarantine there or do they make me quarantine in Oslo first?

Also, have there been any updates/news as to what quarantine hotel *conditions* are like? For example, do they still let you walk around outside (as long as you stay away from people)?

  13. Has anyone applied for a work permit for norway after the border is closed? I have a potential job offer (expecting final offer in a week) with start date 4 months later ( July) . Can we apply for work permit now and hopefully travel by July?

  14. man this is making me crazy. My fiance moved to Norway in december, and I was going to be moving to join her at the beginning of May. Now I have no idea what to do.

  15. So, for those living in Norway is there a plan to reopen the country to tourism once the population are vaccinated ?
I ask as I see they have extended the border closure due to “new variants”, the problem is they can keep borders closed even when 100% of the world is vaccinated … anyway, just wondering is there any sort of roadmap for Norway to allow foreign visitors in ….

  16. Hey so I am 14 yrs old and I was born in india but I have been living in us for like 4+ years and I want to study in norway could help me? Btw I wrote this from a watch

  17. American here. Received my first shot and will be fully vaccinated by the month’s end.

My college roommate is getting married in August and I’m really hopeful that I’ll be able to attend.

    (1) How’s the vaccine rollout going over there thus far? I’d imagine the ability of foreigners like myself to enter the country without a qualifying excuse will be tied to the vaccine distribution domestically in Norway. I.e., If the vaccination rate in Norway is high by summer, I would hope that foreigners who could show proof of vaccination could enter.

    (2) In the optimistic world where I’m able to attend in August, I have a slightly off topic question. They’re getting married near Luster, in Vestland County. I’m trying to minimize the travel time and cost as much as possible. Anyone have experience with Sogndal airport? It seems like a reasonable option for me to fly into Oslo or Bergen and fly to Sogndal.

  18. Hi all, I read the guidelines but got a little confused, instead of a quarantine hotel, is a private residence allowed to quarantine for ten days at?

Edit: I’m fairly certain it is allowed, but I always like to double check.

  19. I’m actually looking to come at the end of July to do some trekking. I will have had both doses of the vaccine by then. Any idea how well coaches/buses will be running by then?

  20. So I’m a Norwegian dual-citizen (other citizenship is UK, where I’m living) trying to visit my boyfriend whom I’ve not seen in the last year approximately.
Reading the announcement that was made by the government today, concerning the change in rules vis a vis quarantine hotels, I have some questions:

Where it says “Unntakene ved sterke velferdshensyn blir videreført. Regjeringen vil innføre en dispensasjonsordning for denne gruppen som gjør at en kan søke om unntak fra karantenehotell og få vedtak før du står på grensen.” would my situation fall under that? I’m assuming not, but I might as well ask.

Also, the amount of time needed in a quarantine hotel has been reduced from 10 days to 7 days it seems – will it be possible to arrive in Norway before this comes into effect on the 27th of May, and then retroactively leave the hotel after a negative text after 7 days. Thanks for any responses, I appreciate it.

  21. What do you think? Will foreign people be allowed to travel to the country by the time of september this year (will probably get the first dose of vaccination by then too)?

  22. I’m an Irish student supposed to be going to Norway for a summer internship through Erasmus very soon in June, I’m just wondering if the easing of restrictions on the 27th of May will allow me to enter the country? Will I be allowed to enter and then undergo travel in a quarantine hotel, or are these new easing of restrictions only for Norwegian citizens?

  23. So, it’s all a bit complicated with the new rules but I think I have finally figured it out.

In the end it seems to all come down to the map on this page. If your country is yellow you can now travel to Norway. If it’s not yellow, you can’t unless you are exempt otherwise.

    https://www.fhi.no/en/op/novel-coronavirus-facts-advice/facts-and-general-advice/entry-quarantine-travel-covid19/

Countries are evaluated on a weekly basis based on their infection rate.

  24. Currently in the UK planning to travel back home to Norway. Do airports provide testing sites or do we need to do it ourselves 24 hours prior? So much conflicting info right now. I’m confused because you can’t really predict how long your results will take and in what form you will receive them?

  25. My wife is scheduled to start teaching at Uni of Stavanger in August and we are moving from the US. Both of us vaccinated; getting a little antsy due to already making a lease agreement. Any reassurance would be great, thanks.

  26. Do I understand this right? If I am fully vaccinated I can now enter Norway even as a foreigner?

    See here:

    [https://www.regjeringen.no/en/aktuelt/exemption-from-travel-quarantine/id2859913/](https://www.regjeringen.no/en/aktuelt/exemption-from-travel-quarantine/id2859913/)

    EDIT:

Did some more research. It seems the country I am from still needs to be yellow and with a full vaccination I can skip quarantine. There are some excemptions but being a tourist isn’t one of them. Well gotta wait. Data from ECDC is 14-day incidence which is higher than the 7-day incidence unfortunately.

  27. I have scoured all of the official government information, and am still unclear on this question: can a fully-vaccinated (Pfizer) American citizen, who resides in America, travel to Norway if they first acquire an EU Digital Covid Certificate in France? Has anyone had experience with this?

  28. I’m scheduled to go to Norway in January but as this moment in time I cannot because Norway does not recognise Australia’s vaccine passports. Does anyone know of a way around this? I’m hoping that Australia will become one of the EU’s third countries with its Covid certificate system. Is there a way to get one for another European country that Norway will recognise?

  29. Hello everyone. If you are a non European citizen that is fully vaccinated, there is a way for you to get a Swiss vaccine certificate which is connected to the EU Covid Passport and subsequently is accepted by Norway.

Go to the above link. You need.

    1) Passport

    2) Your country’s vaccine certificate equivalent.

    3) Proof of travel to Switzerland. Including the address you’ll be staying at. I am genuinely travelling to Switzerland so all I did was present a screenshot of a hotel booking. You just need to provide something like this whether you plan to travel to Switzerland or not.

    4) To pay the 30CHF fee.

    5) Wait for them to process it. For me it took 12 hours from submitting the application.

If you want to play around with the certificate once it is issued to you, you can download the French TousAntiCovid app and use that to scan the Swiss one you get. You’ll find the app will convert the Swiss one to the French vaccine pass so you can be certain that the QR code is recognised outside of Switzerland.

  30. Hey there. So i’m a US citizen trying to see my grandmother in Norway. I’m vaccinated, got my booster, and wondering if there is a possibility to go and what steps i’d need to take. I’ve done a bunch of research and it’s showing I would need proof of my relation to her, but i’m wondering if that is all I need to be able to travel to Norway.

  31. I’ve booked a holiday for end of December for New Years, I see travel is fine for those that are vaccinated. I am thinking about the worst case scenario, I come, things change, there’s a lockdown, I’d imagine I could fly out? Or if I were to get covid, I saw there’s a quarantine scheme? Does anyone know more about this? Thanks!
