On This Day in 1979: Hours after Lord Mountbatten was killed at Mullaghmore in Sligo an IRA ambush of British Soldiers at Narrow Water claimed 18 lives.

  1. Narrow Water is literally under 100 meters from the south, detonation happened from the South of the lough and spotters south of the border witnessed the entire event unfold. The tree line on the other side of the water is Co louth.
    The follow up explosion took more lives as The IRA correctly assessed that the response and rescue command post would be set up at the granite building 150m further down the road.

  2. As a military operation it was planned and executed to perfection.
    Not condoning the IRA but in this situation it was a legitimate target in a war.

    If ukranian soldiers did something like this today we’d be cheering it on.

  3. Whilst the killing of the kid with Mountbatten is bad, he was also a monstrous paedophile who abused young boys frequently at Kincora Boys home.

    I wouldn’t be surprised if the wee lad who was killed was getting abused by him.

    He was a rotten, filthy bastard and the world is certainly better off without him.
