> Worrying research revealed that just 13 percent of headliners in 2022 are women.
I wouldn’t say this was ‘worrying’, Climate change is worrying this is just a tiny small social issue isn’t even a problem.
Also, the figures relate to dance music and it’s not really that surprising given most of the producers and DJ’s are men. There’s still a load of female acts that would be considered big names though.
I suspect it’s just more that female artists tend to dominate in other genres more and it’s just one of those things where sitting in front of a DAW and pissing about on CDJ’s is just something which tends to interest more men.
I DJ, and the DJ subs are also dominated by male users but I still see a lot of recognition of female acts like the black/blessed madonna, Nina Kravitz or Charlotte de witt.
I just think, when I look at a lineup, the gender of the headliners is literally the last thing on my mind. I really don’t care I just want to hear good music.
People choose festivals based on lineups consisting of current and in demand artists and djs not on gender balance.
In all honestly in UK Music it’s been a very male dominated year, I can name male artists who have popped up but I would have terrible naming female ones.. its a huge industry wide issue atm.
Make better music, become more popular, get a headline slot. Simple
Personal note but the festivals I tend to go to are more on the electronic/EDM side as that has a lot of female artists, often headlining too.
It’s not 50:50 but it’s pretty high
Courtney Barnett, Wolf Alice, St Vincent and Wet Leg were staples of the UK festival scene this year.
Bjork headlined bluedot festival.
This article is nonsensical.
If they’re good enough, they’ll be booked.
It’s not really something that needs inclusion is it? The moving of sliders and twisting on knobs. There’s not a lot of innate gender bias in a beat.
The samples trending heavily female probably balances out anything remaining.
Are we supposed to start to listen to shit autotuned pop music now just because someone has a vagina and they need to be represented?
This whole diversity for diversites sake thing is getting really boring now. If female artists sold tickets then they’d be playing at the festivals. They shouldn’t be there merely because someone’s offended that there are too many men. If they can’t pull in a crowd, that isn’t the fans or the festival’s fault.
Why do feminist always complain if there are more men than women in something? they never complain when its the other way around. Also having more men than women is not a bad thing in its self. There are plenty of areas where women dominate.
I watched a lot of the Glastonbury coverage this year and thought the opposite of what this article is suggesting. A good half of the performances I saw were female bands and artists, I also noticed a lot the backing bands were made up of women.
I don’t remember that being the case twenty years ago.
How many female acts are large enough to justify a headline slot at a festival? There’s your answer. Now go away and stop inventing problems that don’t exist.
Most UK festivals are nostalgia fests featuring heritage acts, so the line-ups will reflect eras of the music industry when it consisted of blokes who used to be in bands signing bands of blokes for blokes to play on Radio 1
Of the evening slots on the Pyramid stage at this years’ Glastonbury, **4/9** were female artists, mixed gender acts, or black performers
On the Other stage, **7/9** of the evening slot performers were female, black or gay – maybe some of those were booked with one eye on diversity, but they’re also some of the biggest pop acts in the world
God I hate these rhetorical ‘we need to talk about’ style journalism. Just pick the lowest hanging fruit possible and make an issue out of it, when in reality nobody gives a shit and there’s actual problems / meaningful social issues that deserve the real spotlight.
Time to get Megan Thee Stallion headlining.
this right here. this is identity politics.
I dunno, where are all the female bin collectors (or bin men, as they’re more commonly known)?
Define female.
Be very careful.
At home making dinner for when the male acts get home
50% of the acts at the festival I help run are female/trans/lgbtq

Why does gender matter?
