Sinn Féin TD Johnny Guirke says ‘letting agent error’ behind failure to register rental property with RTB

  1. Doesn’t it seem like we have an awful lot of totally incompetent letting agents in this country? Always “forgetting” to register with RTB. No chance at all that agents are conspiring with landlords to avoid registering? I surely that’s too cynical?

  2. From the article: “Mr Guirke has four rental properties across the country – two in Co Longford, a house in Co Meath and a property in Co Galway.”

  3. We will see a mob with pitchforks and flaming torches for the Sinn Fein lad.

I wonder how much rent he gets and if ever spoke in the dail about housing matters.

I assume r/ireland will be making hourly threads on this miscreant, advocate for him to be tarred-and-feathered, his party leader will remove him from any positions he holds, and he’ll live out the rest of his life in disgrace?

I also assume that clown who proudly posted screenshots of himself sending abuse to Robert Troy is firing up his email machine as we speak?

  5. Good. My fear is that there’s going to be a sweet spot here. If too few landlord TDs get rumbled, it will be a storm in a tea cup where we’ll get a few resignations and the usual platitudes. If too many get scuppered, there will be some kind of amnesty and the whole thing will just roll off the back of the political class.

  6. I hope we see the same level of outrage here!

Also that is bullshit. I’m almost 100% sure registering a property on RTB is the duty of the owner.

Time to yell at the Sinn Fein chip whip about Standards in Public Office and hypocrisy over an email, see what he says.

  7. What’s the standard penalty for when the average Joe gets caught with an unregistered property? Will that be enforced in these cases?

  8. As Sinn Fein get more popular and grow their membership they will attract the kind of people who want to be politicians not just their own prepared true believer “activist” candidates and therefore you’ll see more of this. They are becoming a version of what Fianna Fáil used to be, and we all know how that turned out.

  9. There really needs to be some method to punish TDs in terms of their pay. They’ll all stay in office and get their full salary so they may as well chance breaking the rules. No repurcussions whatsoever.

Extremely unlikely to happen when they’re the ones who would vote on such a change.

  10. I had a letting agency when I was away and it’s certainly not up to them to register the property. Even if it was they wouldn’t know how🤦‍♂️

  11. Why did this make it to the paper so quickly when Troy took so long with so much bollocksology?

  12. I was waiting for something like this with the Troy controversy, but I didn’t expect a Sf TD to be caught out. There will be a lot more to follow.

When it comes to SF it’s the number of properties the part own that bothers me, not necessarily the individual TDs. An ex party member claimed that they had over 100 properties. It makes you wonder if it influences their housing policy.

  13. Someone needs to create a website linking politicians to properties owned. That shows how much rent a politician is getting. And shows the status of a property, e.g. if it’s registered with the RTB, and or has a fire safety cert.

  14. I saw a few claiming troy should resign as a TD. I wonder if the same people will call for Guirke to resign as a TD.

I hope articles like these keep on coming. If TDs are only safe from attention if they are in index funds maybe we’ll get some tax reform.

  15. Wait?! What! Socialist champion of the people Sinn Féin TD Johnny Guirke is a landlord!? Jaysus. It’s almost as if SF are just another shower out for themselves

  16. He’s a lying piece of shit.

He’s one of two TD’s out of the dozen or so I emailed when I was facing homelessness who didn’t even bother with a courtesy response.

    He doesn’t care.

    None of them do.

  17. I thought SF were the party of the workers , down trodden etc and that their TDs only draw the average Irish salary. Where did this TD get the funds for 4 properties?

  18. I’ve said it on here dozens of times and been downvoted but people need to understand that all politicians are the same regardless of what party they’re affiliated with. Sinn Fein members are no different.

You are naive to believe that Sinn Fein are any more moral than the current shower. I can guarantee you that SF will capitulate like once they’re in power just like every other political party.
