Easier to maintain and have good roads when there is no ground frost.
Forest roads in the Nordic with no asphalt will give you a really bumpy ride due to so many potholes.
As a Belgian I can confirm every time I cross a border the road feels much better 😅.
Is there someone who regularly drives around Europe to confirm our bad road situation? I keep hearing from fellow Czechs how the roads are bad, but I don’t drive myself and there could be a bias, because Czechs tend to complain all the time about everything.
UK has better roads than Poland? Yeah, sure XD
Portugese roads are a complete joy to ride on just recently did a roadtrip from lisboa – peniche- tomar – coimbra and back such a peaceful smooth roadtrip, now every week im going to plan roadtrip where ever i can in the country, just got to be mindful of the gas price though.
This map in large part also shows how good or bad the conditions for roads are in different regions of Europe.
It’s very expensive to maintain good roads in places where the climate and geology is adverse to road maintenance, requiring constant attention and spending.
I’d like to think there is a way to construct roads that would last centuries even in bad conditions… but nobody can afford to pay for it, or indeed impede traffic for the long time it would take to construct them.
Man, Roman roads trully are amazing.
Latvian roads are weird. We don’t really have potholes on main streets/roads.
But for some dumbass reason manholes are not considered potholes.
So if a manhole has been pushed into the ground for 10cm – they’re just gonna leave it there.
Reporting it to the govt does nothing.
Very popular among Swedish motorcyclists to ride in Croatia. Haven’t been there myself yet, but it tells you a lot about the quality of the roads.
Im a little surprised as ive been to couple of countries and Poland have now very decent road. I can travel mostly everywhere with 2 or 3 lane new highway.
The first place of the Netherlands clearly shows that bike infrastructure doesn’t compete with car infrastructure. They can be build together fine. Its not bad but I would like to see more investment into the public transport systems here though.
