Serbia to Buy Electricity from Azerbaijan ‘On Favourable Terms’

  1. Good. Less reliance on Russia is a good thing. The whole Balkans is scrambling to secure energy for Q4-2023 due to getting outbid in energy power markets with our poor buying power. Draught makes things ever worse because our hydro-centrals are at critical capacity.

  2. At a first glance it seem ridiculous for a person who knows a bit of European geography – long-haul transmission of electric energy costs a lot.

But given the current energy prices and $40 per MWh per 1000 miles [transmission cost estimate](https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2589004221014668), it seems reasonable.

Though large-scale exports will require (not built yet) underwater cable from Georgia to Romania.
