Lithuania asks EU for ‘strong reaction’ to Chinese pressure

  1. Human rights vs. economical interests.

Not sure where the middle ground is. You poke the bear knowingly and willingly. And even at low trade level it obviously did hurt you guys.

  2. I don’t remember any “strong reaction” by EU ever. If someone knows any then please feel free to remind me.

  3. And EU should deliver, an economic coercion of a union member is unacceptable, especially considering Lithuania didn’t break any rules.

  4. This entire thing is an US operation to pull EU into the China spat. They’re using their influence in some members to drag us into Pacific politics. It’s incredibly blatant, especially with the fictive cybersecurity threats they fabricated in Chinese phones. It’s an organized government effort in Lithuania to escalate their spat with China and the only motive that makes sense is that they’re working for the american in exchange for better guarantees against Russia or economic benefits.

China has many problems and EU policy on it is schizophrenic, but we should not be taken for fools and accept the things that have happened at face value. We’re being manipulated.

  5. It was well known that there will be a Chinese response when Lithuania opened Taiwan representative office.

Did Lithuania consult EU before opening Taiwan representative office? No. Lithuania knew the consequences and decided to drag EU into them without any consultations or votes.

Fuck that. If there is to be a trade war with China, I want people whom I elected to start it. Not Lithuanian government. If Lithuania wants EU support in their foreign policy it should consult EU about their foreign policy, not US.

  6. This ought to be a turning point for the EU.

Can we let a member state be bullied? What is the point of the EU if it can’t protect a state like Lithuania?

  7. We need to support Taiwan, it is a free democratic country. If my country was not supported by other brave countries (Iceland thank you for being first) i would be speaking fucking Russian and probably trying to invade Ukraine.

  8. It’s funny how silent the EU is on that matter, if it doesn’t concern big countries like Germany and France, it becomes a non problem for the EU

  9. Sorry but i dont think union can work this way longterm. Small countries can easily be influenced by bigger countries (like US for example) to start conflict with china and drag whole union into it… for US interest in this case. And even if it wasnt work of major geopolitical player like US, 1 country of EU doesnt take anybody elses interest into account and starts conflict like this (shows no solidarity for partners in union) and then expects union to show solidarity? This makes union into easily influenced and controlled useful idiot.

In this specific case i think union should help lithuania but at the same time EU should forbid similar actions of individual members without larger previous discussion with other EU members.

  10. Lithuania is literally the yapping chihuahua of the EU. They bark alot at big dogs then run away and hide behind their master once they get the attention of whomever they were barking at. 🤣

  11. I am not so well versed in international trade, but isn’t China’s ban against lithuania’s goods a general violation againt WTO rules?

  12. The least the EU could do is to reciprocate fully on Union level. Lithuanian companies are not allowed to enter Chinese market –> Chinese companies should not be allowed to enter EU market. China is really one of the principal bad actors on the world stage today alongside Russia and Iran and should be treated as such. The way they treat Taiwan and Hong Kong, the Uyghur minority, the insane ‘nine-dash line’ claim to the SCS etc really mean they should not be treated like a normal country. EU should avoid appeasement with them and use a hard line against them until they normalize their behavior.

  13. Lithuania you walk into this without consulting any EU government now figure out how to get out of it yourself.

  14. Let me get this straight. Lithuania picks a stupid fight over Taiwan, deviating from 60 years of European foreign policy and then say “now stand by me”?

  15. Lithuania keeps barking up until the Chinese elephant notices that and does something to make the doggy remember it’s place and then the little Baltic state starts crying for help, how sad 😭
