  1. I’m just accepting that I’m going to be cold. Thermostat will be as low as is possible whilst stopping mould. Just bought a new showerhead to try to reduce hot water usage.

Aside from that I have a load of comfy clothes, hot water bottles and the like to keep me warm even if the house is cold. Heat the person not the house.

Partially though I’m cutting down because I can, we are both adults and have no kids. We are in good health. The less I use, the less the elderly and those with young kids will face shortages.

  2. Couple trees fell down in february, so hold your nose, I’ll be burning those to keep a bit warm. Might move all stuff to my (large) living room (with mezzanine) so I’d only need to heat that room and the bathroom. Ventilate the rest properly to prevent mould. Maybe run a couple dehumidifiers (solar panels and old meter, I overproduce so I’ve got some wiggle room there).

    Also buying thermal underwear 🙂

  3. This is getting completely insane ! Shouldn’t we do like in the UK and stop paying these crazy bills ?

  4. I’m buying all the beans i can find.
Maybe i can make some side cash selling farts.

Not looking for a pipeline- offer!

  5. My fireplace used one a week for mood evening: look at me, I’m the heat source now!

Edit: do I see good? ~€25 to ~€340 in a year? Like 1300% up?

  6. I am, EXTREMELY, nervous. Honestly, except reducing my consumption to the max and move back to a shared house, I can’t do much. An extreme plan would be to drop my job to get fully remote and live this winter in a sunny location (like Gran Canaria) but this is wishful thinking. I am trying to put aside 2500 euros extra just for gas/electricity bills between November and March.

  7. And what happened to the ‘strategic reserve’ the EU was/is building up for the coming winter? Last I heard from that, it would be our saving grace

  8. We should have enough in savings and thankfully our price is set in the contract. Still nervous though, we have a 7-month old baby so we pretty much have to keep the house at a reasonable temperature :/

  9. Well, people who change cobtracts this winter should be scared. The rest should have already felt that increase in their monthly bill as they are projected on yearly basis and most suppliers ran actions to raise the monthly bills to prevent a lack of funds.

So yeah, ofcourse everyone is scared. But normally you should already be on monthly bills that anticipate that.

If you aren’t check it now and raise the monthly bill so you don’t have a gigantic yearly bill.

  10. I am absolutely fucked. What are peoples strategies? Should we really just trust our government to come up with a strategy? I live in a gas heated apartment with no fireplace, I am fucked. I guess I will be sleeping in 3 sweaters

  11. Not worried for myself actually… We barely have real winters compared to other parts of Europe, most can totally go through the season without turning on the heat (i already did that last year). Bundle up y’all, time to make some blanket forts

  12. I am already mentally preparing myself to be present in the office every day and to undergo the cold showers.

  13. Why don’t we shoot ourselves in the foot and close the power plants right now…? No worries the alcohol keeps us warm, and it might give us more great ideas!

  14. If you want to know how much your energy bill is going to be you have to go to mijnenergy.be and search as if you were doing a new contract. My electric bill has gone from 4500 euros per year to over 9300 euros. And this is before the October rise and the predicted rise in January. There will be basically a 300% increase in your costs from comparing jan 21 to jan 23.

I’m looking at an annual energy bill of 15000 euros

  15. Already bought my gasoline for winter, I knew it was gonna be hardcore… with current prices, I think it woulda been roughly 400€ more than what I paid

  16. Yes.

I’m a single dad and I have my 2 children almost 100% of the time. Because I earn a bit more than average I get 10 euro alimony per child (great judge lol) and I don’t get the ‘sociaal tarief’. My heating and warm water is with gas, I’m already at 1000kwh this year… it will be a very cold winter. I’ve I calculate my ‘eindafrekening’ for gas and electricity and I cannot pay it.

Will be a fun end of the year.

edit: I can pay it but it feels I’m just going to work to pay for energy.

  17. Typical Belgium. One of smallest countries but some of the biggest fuck ups the past years ever seen. They have been taking advantage of their people for too long. Do you know how many people sit in our parlement and government that we pay millions for each year just to sit and look busy. Fire all those useless piepz and we could serieusly lower taxes and make life better for everyone
