We are a nation of scientist!

  1. We also lead the world in patent applications per capita, largely driven by research in the pharma industry and academic institutions.

  2. Switzerland:“Thank you, scientists. We really appreciate your accomplishments. Your hard work has brought us prestige and material wealth, as well as breakthroughs in human achievements. We all love and respect you so much.“

Swiss scientists: „Uh, thanks I guess? But could you please pay us an adequate wage? Seems unfair that a lot of scientists with PhD make less than a cashier at ALDI. I mean people who are actively destroying our planet and refuse to recognize drinkable water as a human right are getting paid millions. Also: could you please start offering us more indefinite work contracts? I would really like to plan my future and start a family at one point.“

Switzerland: „My lovely scientists. So humble, so great. Even if we continue to pay you a rat‘s fart, you are still going to sacrifice your life for humanity‘s benefit, aren’t you? We will pay you the same way we pay those losers called nurses: with applause. Now GTFO, you haven’t even won a Nobel prize while we started this conversation.“

  3. I wish this scientific experimentalism would apply also to swiss politcs and society. We could lead in so many fields, since we are a rich and safe country. But we vote against any progress because swiss people fear to lose their swissneyland 😪

  4. I would point out that alot of the scientists are not swiss by birth but migrated from other countries. But you are correct that swiss treats academics like any other professional job and unlike other countries pays them well.

  5. I will be trying to move to Switzerland next year and I gotta admit it’s intimidating that you have some top universities in the world. It will probably be pretty hard competing for a job against a Swiss resident (I work as Software Engineer). I’ll try my best to move to your beautiful country though 🙂

  6. I would like to say something extremely important: the university’s raking doesn’t assure a good teaching experience or a high quality degree. These rankings are probably only specific to research. In Europe there are extremely good Universities way better in the teaching quality (and material) than Switzerland!

This map easily misinforms a lot of students, which often have high hopes in the university and sadly spread this stereotype.
This is absolutely not a dogmatic view that I’m proposing and I’m not saying that everything is shit. But please open your eyes and stop being so lazy in analysing such a wide system. The situation is much more complex than this and probably impossible to summarise in a disputable ranking. These rankings should be more serious and specific… so probably more honest(?)

Have a nice day! And just to be clear, I’m open to critics and opinions🥰

  7. Meanwhile, most swiss people struggle to write halfway correct sentences in high german.

“Der Satz hier ist einer wo ich selber geschrieben habe, oder?”.

  8. I could only talk from my architecture field here:

but ngl tho architecture in swiss universities are on another level than in germany. Even their fh is like on par with german tu. and the ethz architecture faculty is just on another world. I think its just the best uni in the world for architecture. the profs, the assistants and the courses are just out of damn mind great

  9. There is certainly a lot of pride to take in having the best European universities, but is it really fair to make a nationalist argument out of it? I think there are around 70% of foreign PhD students at ETH

  10. The Leiden ranking is not a ranking per se. They evaluate 4 different areas with 4-6 ways of ranking. You can pick and choose what you want to rank. For example I can rank universities by top 1% most cited papers divided by papers published in total. Or by top 5%, top 10% etc.
