Good news. Can’t wait to see how Reddit thinks this is a plot by the Illuminati capitalists.
Seems like another underhanded way to force people onto smart meters. Guess I’ll just bring out the heavy magnet for my rebate.
*”minimising the use of goods such as tumble dryers, dishwashers and games consoles during the peak hours of 17:00 and 20:00”*
Jokes on them. I game all night when the kids are sleeping 🤣.
How about just cutting energy bills regardless.
I’d quite like to see this as a permanent measure, it could help the elderly afford their bills (as they’re generally more vulnerable to heating costs and aren’t limited to peak time usage) and it’d be a real advantage for working from home too
if we can distribute the energy load more evenly across the day it’d massive help our energy generation and storage needs, win in my book
This is exactly the kind of scheme that what will be the ‘FSO’ (future system operator rebrand of ESO as its nationalised) should be able to make work. Surprise surprise though, as will all ESO recent actions its slightly too little much too late.
Would be much easier if the completely fake absurdity of the domestic energy supply market was done away with altogether and demand side response and demand shifting was the responsibility of the FSO, working in conjunction with a single nationalised billing platform though, so I’ll cut them some slack there too. They also have to work on getting stuff through ofgem too so maybe even a bit more slack is due…
It’s not called “peak-time” for no reason though. Are we meant to eat dinner at 8pm?
It this was combined with home power storage so you could top up batteries outside of peak-time, I think this would be a better idea.
This is stupid because there are many people like me who has a smart meter, that’s not reported readings for months. Known issue with loads of them.
Also is this not the same as things like economy 7, where electricity is more expensive during certain hours.
This is a good plan but it needs to be implemented competently. An enormous amount of your bill is spent providing energy in the 4-7pm peak. Gas peaker plants that sit idle for most of the spool up in anticipation for the peak as people come home and start using energy. If we can shift some of that away we can considerably reduce the consumption of gas, which has a two fold impact, it reduces gas prices, and it will reduce average electricity prices.
So, over the summer we’ve had lots of articles about water shortages and leaks and things like hose pipe bans. And in every single thread people have rightly pointed out how the vast majority of water lost is from the water companies due to leaks.
So why is it that every time a thread comes up about saving energy at “peak times”, hardly anyone ever talks about the manufacturing sector which takes up a huge amount of energy?
Octopus have been doing this for years
Hope this gives a better discount than Economy 7 does. I try to run as much as possible at night, but it’s not the good deal it used to be.
There’s a reason it’s peak time… because that’s when people need to use the power.
Ok. Which hours do I have to plan to be cold in? I’ll have to make some bookings with the weather to make sure they don’t clash :-/
Oh boy, I cant wait for everyone in my block of flats to use thier washing machines at 2am!
Coming soon… Surge Pricing
The thing about that… If everyone avoids peak time they’ll create new peaks.
This feels like a way to force people back into the office.
They’ll do anything rather than nationalise energy and make it affordable. It’s 2022 – we have renewable technology and everyone north of London is going back to the 1800s.
Wait. So if I…Say…Bought a UPS for my PC, I could switch to using that for a couple of hours at peak and really benefit?
I was part of the trial with octopus; and it was zero hassle and a nice way to remind us to stop using energy in the critical time slots.
Simple stuff like putting the dishwasher and washing machine on timer; or more importantly in our case; the car.
It was zero hassle and just made us think about it a bit more. We still do it now; even though the trial is over.
Beast system is corrupt to thr core
Please do not put on your tumble dryer overnight. I will not have ours on if we are out of the house or asleep as is probably the biggest fire risk in your house if you don’t have candles.
Wonder what this means for people with solar power and batteries. Already use very little from the grid and when. Need extra in winter then charge the battery at night.
Already about as off-peak ad can get. Do they get punished by this?
I’m guessing GP’s will start writing prescriptions to offset your energy bill.
“are we going on holiday this year?”
No, it’s too expensive.
“can I play video games during my time off, then?”
No, it’s too expensive.
What a future we’ve created for ourselves.
Fastforward a few years to when this becomes industry standard and the “discount” you recieve will be they *only* charge you the normal price during off peak, while peak usage costs triple. Regardless of any positive environmental impact or efficieny improvements this scheme could cause, it will fast become a rip-off exercise.
Let’s be honest now.
We all know how this is actually going to work. It won’t be ‘save money for avoiding peak hours’ it will wind up being ‘get charged more for peak hours’.
Can’t even get a smart meter because it’s too high up the wall.
I don’t really understand this. It sounds like the energy companies will be able to charge less for energy during off-peak times than during peak times. But it’s always been reported that they pay a set price per unit of energy and that’s why prices have gone up so high, because those units of energy are costing more for the energy companies to buy. So how come they are now saying they are able to charge less if we do our washing and drying in the middle of the night. Why can’t they just charge that lower price all day everyday?
