Over-50s turn to house-shares to beat rising rents

  1. So what you are saying is we are going back to the old tenements type accommodation. Get as many people in a house as possible for as expensive as possible.

  2. I bet a good few are moving back in with their parents too.

We need a housing revolution. Our current system is a disgrace.

  3. The thought of having to live with strangers again, even in my late thirties, makes my stomach drop. Something is seriously seriously wrong when this is starting to seem even vaguely normal.

  4. Great idea, retirement house buddy’s and hostels. That should counter social isolation and free up some homes for family’s!

  5. > She was previously living in a one-bedroom flat just outside Eastbourne but struggled to cover her bills alongside rent of around £560 a month.
    > Now she pays £500 a month for a room, excluding bills, in a shared house in the town.

Was that meant to say including bills? Seems strange to move into a shared house just to save £60 per month

  6. Did anyone read the article?

She moved in to the house share 5years ago, her rent went from £560pcm to £500pcm, both excluding bills.

5 years ago. Yes, the cost of living has been going up for a while, but it has been rapidly going up the last 12 months

I am not saying this is not something happening, but this lady moving has nothing to do with the current cost of living crisis.

Also, I kinda feel like it’s a good approach. These older guys sell, or move out of their places, making them available to younger people. They also get a support network around them, for lower cost.

  7. I thought all boomers were rich? The internet says that every issue around today is down to them and I’m sure the Internet doesn’t lie

  8. If your in your 50s you are one of the last generations to have had access to affordable houses on working class wages. 40 years working, to work for a better quality of life….
Young people (anyone under 40). Would absolutely love to exist in a time with these opportunities. So let’s not get the tissues out. Sometimes your in the position you put yourself in.

  9. The internet acts like older people are all wealthy or own their own homes etc.

‘Fraid the working class grow old too.

  10. I’m fucking crying. I’m looking at rents this week, £350-450 would get a comfortable 1-2 bedroom flat in a reasonable area in 2016 when I last looked. It won’t even get you a bedsit anymore. Like lolwut.

And of the 3 bedrooms (£700-1000++++) the competition for them has been so fierce I’ve barely had time to book a viewing before they’ve been snapped up.

    :(((

  11. “to beat rising rents”

They always make these stories sound as if it’s the savvy person finding a clever loophole.

No, what this is saying is that rents are so extreme all generations are forced in to shared accommodation.
