> A letter was sent by seven religious leaders to the town council, saying the statue was “offensive to God”.
He’s welcome to file a civil suit.
I’m sure if God is that bothered he will get off his arse and do something.
I don’t care about the religious stuff, but it is pretty ugly. It looks like it’s made up of large versions of those rocks kids paint, then leave in the woods for others to find a post about.
Why does/should anyone listen to religious leaders any more than we listen to a flat earther or an alien abductee? They both strongly believe in something too.
Apart from numbers and longevity, what else sets them apart?
Perhaps more people are Harry Styles fans nowadays, maybe we should ask their fan club secretaries for their opinion?
Which God?
There are a few from the Greek gods, roman gods Egyptian gods, Hindu gods etc
“My imaginary friend is going to be so upset about the name of your ugly sculpture!”
Let’s not pretend it’s anything other than delusion or mental illness.
Poor god, being offended like that. Lucky he has those religious leaders to confide in.
The sculptor said of the statue “she is not religious, she is celebrating mother earth”.
um….
Surely “religious leader” and “St Austell” can’t go together, no god would create such a place!
This is not news
Its fine. I’ve spoken withe the flying spaghetti monster and they’re fine with it
Worshipping the Earth itself predates Christianity, I think the Earth gets a better claim to be worshipped on that alone.
Oh that what that is? I thought it was a giant sword supplied by the eden project- I’m not to fussed about the statue it’s self but it’s the random choice of colours that really make it, well, garish
My hometown on the front of the UK sub, didn’t think I would see the day!
Some context from a local:
This statue is a fucking cancer… It cost 80k to make and in the same month our council tells us that our Royal Cornwall Museum will be dissolved and put into closure.
BOTH use the same arts and culture funds.
There was a ton of hate from locals, almost everyone you speak to wants the abomination removed. I’m sure the religious guys are just trying to find a loophole to get rid of it.
My first thought “that statue is fucking ugly, get rid of it”.
My second thought “Oh, it looks great. I think it should stay – or maybe it can go on tour for part of the year to other towns?” if it pisses off obnoxious religious people that much.
Hilariously, the earth god is about as real as the christian god.
Nothing to do with God. It should be taken down because it’s uglier than the inside of Boris Johnsons soiled Y fronts.
Seems like a lot of mystical ideas. Why does he think this being can use it’s influence, like as if he believes multiple exist? What’s up with the thing about him fulfilling a prophecy on the churches website?
To think, if it was an Imam that was the religious leader demanding this statue be removed, that town’s council would see it removed immediately.
I wonder why people don’t take other religious leaders as seriously? It’s a mystery to me…
I tend to object to religious leaders and would quite like to see *them* removed, but on the other hand, while I know art is subjective that’s one fucking ugly sculpture.
> A letter was sent by seven religious leaders to the town council, saying the statue was “offensive to God”.
“Take it down, my imaginary friend’s really insecure!”.
Doesn’t even look that good…
These seem like the utterings of religious fundamentalists. Listening to people with such views would be a dangerous road to go down.
You know, I used to be like a lot of you in here I.e. dismissive and mocking of religion (especially Christianity). All I’m going to say is, it is so easily to to that, isn’t it, yet it is not nearly as enlightened or inventive a position to take as you tell yourself. Learning more and certain experiences showed me that, after being athiest/agnostic for most of my teens and twenties. But this goes to show that anyone can realise that – even you who may never dream that you’d ever embrace Christianity because you see yourself as beyond it. There is hope for all who seek it.
Now, I’m not a fan of the overly scrupulous and foolish, but they are low hanging fruit and anyone with intellectual and philosophical integrity will understand that.
Om another note, the statue is ugly so no matter.
The love the idea that an all powerful omnipotent supernatural being could give a shit about a statue on some tiny planet amongst a basically infinite cosmos.
And of course if were to go and whinge about one their churches I would get very little press or sympathy.
They should object to it because it’s fucking hideous. It looks like it was made a giant toddler. When can we start making public art that looks good again? This is like some kind of demoralization tactic.
