Does it have a solution for this crisis? Will next year be better than now?

  1. Would be class if there was a big student protest on housing in colleges across the country. They all put up tents and lived on campus grounds EP style. To absolutely shame the government on an international level.

  2. They should do it whether they have permission or not. Flooding a campus with tents is a sure fire way to make the government look bad for their apathy towards the housing crisis.

That way some people who have comfortable and sheltered lives might actually see just how bad it is.

  3. Work your arse off studying for the LC and some shit low-paid job and then you get the chance to beg for a tent like someone on Skid Row.

Why the fuck aren’t students running amoc in the streets like they used to? Last 20 years has turned us into a bunch of pathetic, beaten down serfs who are grateful to cling onto the periphery of society as long as our masters leave us alone and don’t raise the tariff too often.

  4. At what point to NIMBYs get hung drawn and quartered? For 10 years now student accommodation has been blocked by “residents associations” all over Dublin. Dublin has 4 universities across 7 main campuses, with lots of smaller colleges, institutes and speciality CFEs dotted all around the city. It should’ve been prioritised, not left to die on the vine like it has.

But no, this moral panic about property values decreasing and “being overlooked”, and the 4 local authorities, ABP and the courts all taking the wrong side, has led to a massive intergenerational failure. Old people have waged civil war on young people for over a decade now.

The solution is to build more and build higher. Every scrap of land in Dublin should have *something* built on it. The amount of waste ground and empty space around places like Grangegorman and Tallaght for example is sickening when students in those campuses have nowhere to live.

  5. Have colleges all returned to pre COVID levels of “in class” time? surely we could ease some pressure by allowing remote learning where ever possible?

  6. Nothing like a tent city to illustrate that housing is an issue. I hope students set them up on every campus with or without permission.

  7. I’ve been pushing this idea for the last couple of years.

Publicly embarrass the government, every college should allow students to put up shanty towns on campus, students should pitch up in public parks, put caravans in car parks with clamps on the wheels.

Publicly embarass a government to whom everything revolves around global perception.

  8. Soon enough it won’t be just college students in tents but the mass majority of us because never mind student housing us people out of college can even find somewhere to live.

Ireland will look like California in a few years time……just full of homeless people

  9. I just found my dream job posting online, I’m trained for it, highly skilled, highly educated and very passionate in this field and its exactly what I want to do. Then realised its based on Dublin and my chances of finding reasonable accommodation are so slim that I don’t know if it’s worth the effort in applying.

  10. Jesus Christ. I feel fair bad for people who have started college in the last 3 years. First Covid comes and you’re stuck at home getting fuck all college experience and doubtless a much worse education, all while getting charged the same by cunt capitalist universities. Then when things get back to normal, you can’t even get a place to live for the college year. They’ve been absolutely failed.

  11. QUB could bulldoze 2 massive office blocks in the city centre of Belfast and throw up 3 11 floor and 1 14 floor cores of apartments in well under 24 months. Why can none of the uni’s in Dublin do this? More to the point, why can’t they do like Intel and just buy something like a hotel with decent enough structural integrity and convert it to apartments? It’s ridiculous.

  12. Credit Union loan —–> Campervan

Thats the strategy I’ve gone with. Not looking forward to winter in Letterkenny, but if I can just get through this degree, I can fuck off somewhere else.
