Employment surges to record levels in Ireland

  1. Broken down into:

Full time: 2,010,500 (78.7%) – which is over 2 million for the first time.

Part time (not underemployed): 429,300 (16.8%) – presumably a large chunk of these are students not seeking full time work etc

    Part time (underemployed): 114,700 (4.5%)

Numbers working in construction increased by 8,000 in the 3 months also, hopefully that keeps up.

Also found it interesting how almost 70% of the part time workers are female. Makes sense I suppose in terms of household dynamics and sectors.

  2. “Approaching full employment”… would make one wonder if that was the reason they decided to take in so much refugees…

  3. The last time this happened, during the height of the Celtic Tiger, it coincided with EU expansion. So there was a flow of migrants to come into the country and suppress wages. And that in turn prevented a wage-price spiral.

This time, the pool of migrants, is much less (Ukrainian refugees aside). And we are going through an inflation.

Anyone else get the feeling things are about to blow?

  4. I remember a time when people were in complete denial that our economy was in recovery. Crazy when you think about it now.

  5. It’s actually a challenge to not have a job at the moment long May it continue, for all the bad going on in the world the employment market is great gives us opportunities to progress even if you’re not in the perfect job now you can keep at it and look for something better.

  6. I wonder about the quality of these jobs. There might be a lot for lower retail / catering or unskilled roles, all below €35K. What about better pay and conditions and a job that you might be able to afford basics like a home of your own, a decent car and a bit of dispisable income with.

  7. Most companies I know are pausing recruitment or laying employees off outside of the travel industry. Am I missing something?

  8. It certainly is an employee’s market.
I am encouraging in every way the company I work for to improve salary and conditions we work for. They actually have a great reputation as employers and yet still our turnover rate is higher than ever because there’s so much choice.
