> A Sinn Féin tricolour flag, home-made, assembled from panels of green, white and orange cloth, with the words ‘Sinn Fein go Deo’ (Sinn Fein Forever) above a spray of shamrock, painted in green onto the central panel. Recovered from Dublin Castle yard where it had been dumped by British troops with weapons, equipment and uniforms surrendered by Irish Volunteers at the end of the Rising. It was recovered from the Castle Yard by James Hayes, an accounts clerk in the Royal Irish Constabulary office in the Castle. An extremely rare fully provenanced flag of the 1916 Rising, of immense historical importance.
I’m always slightly amazed that nobody seems to really care whether this kind of stuff (which was effectively looted) ends up in private hands or not.
I remember watching a documentary about this flag. It was flown over one of the buildings occupied by the Irish Volunteers in Abidjan back in the day.
I could be wrong, but I was under the impression that Sinn Fein played no part in the planning or execution of the rising. It was only in the aftermath that they were wrongly blamed in the media, hence their popularity and landslide victory in the 1918 general election.
So why would a volunteer have Sinn Fein on their flag?
Am I completely wrong? People on this sub are often very knowledgeable about our history!
