Good luck with that. Russia seems to have a “what doesn’t kill me makes me stronger” approach to sanctions; the nudge to become further self sufficient would probably be handy, long run
Hilarious the US feels it has to clarify they don’t plan on sending in their own forces. Ukraine, you’re being used as the shit stirring spoon
Looks like they have accepted that Ukraine will be invaded.
They already invade in 2014, Russia control Crimea and far east of Ukraine and sanction dont work. With nord stream 2 Russia dont even must AGAIN invade them. They will blackmail Ukraine with gas supplies.
– Hey, my country will be invaded, can you help?
– We will watch with popcorn and then leave very very bad reviews, that should stop the invader, right?
A super stern “please don’t” ought to do it
The real barrier against effective sanctions is the overwhelming power enjoyed by the wealthy in the West.
If the West went hard against the assets of the oligarchs, a bunch of them would start to pressure Putin. But the moment such ideas would start floating around, an army of Western lobbyists and lawyers would get their pet lawmakers to kill it.
Unless these sanctions are a new type of missile I don’t see this being much of a deterrence.
They already halved the Russian economy after the annexation of Crimea, I’m sure that this time they can destroy the other half.
As long as Europe feeds on Russian gas, “significant and severe” sounds ridiculous.
A bitter laugh came out of me when I saw “sanctions”.
It’s like they tolerate the invasion and that makes me sad
There can be no peace in Europe, until Putin and his puppets are GONE
People complaining that sanctions aren’t enough; what would you rather us do? War with Russia?
Unless they freeze the bank accounts of the oligarchs that surround Putin, the political support Putain would gain among the nationalists in Russia and the cover for his abysmal management of the pandemic will outweigh the backlash.
So basically they are saying they are throwing ukraine to the dogs
Oh no, sanctions on an economy we have already sanctioned enough to be borderline sanction proof regarding us, and who have relatively little left to target anyway. Pathetic.
Dealing with Russia is like dealing with an angry wild animal. If you punished it it resent you, you can’t go 1vs1 fight with it, all you can do is positive reinforcement and hope if doesn’t chop up you head.
Situation in Ukraine show to countries like NKorea or Iran that words from US have 0 weight. If you want to be safe – get nukes. If you have nukes dont listen to US, UK and Russia because they wil guarantee your safety at start then will say ‘nah fam, we dont care’. Budapest memorandum was provably single worst idea in history of any national security for ukraine.
the EU and US from previois statements made it sound like they would intervene in case of war, now it is their typical angery letter and sanctions.
Still cant blame anyone for not wanting to defend a non Nato/EU country agsinst a nuclear power and risk their soldier’s lives and equipment. Nato cant even stop infighting let alone share a common enemy
Hilarious!
They said the same in 1994, the 5th of December when Ukraine handed over the world’s third-largest nuclear arsenal.
The same was said to Saakashvili in 2007-08.
The same was said when west green-lit Nord Stream.
The same is happening now.
Concerns are flying from the west, while rockets are flying from Russia. “Strategic partners” we are yeah, strategic to other’s needs, but when we are in danger, we will die and later sanctions will come in which will act for some months or years and will be forgotten and taken off. Awesome friends, we’ve got! 🙂 Cowards!
Ukrainian bros, as in 2014, your real friends will be fighting with you on the frontline, I already know that Georgian veterans and volunteers are gathering people and will have a flight to Ukraine at the end of this year or in January! Stay safe and stay strong!
Hasn’t Russia already invaded Ukraine? What did the sanctions do so far?
These “sanctions” are just a slap over the wrist. It’s not like the eu will stop buying €30 billion worth of oil and gas from Russia.
Don’t talk. Act.
They didn’t do a squat about Crimea
Oh no! Anyway…

Oh boy… Guess we are gonna have a field day here…
“We will be very angry. And we will write you a letter, telling you how angry we are.”
EU currently preparing their harshest sternly worded letters and are standing by for a precision tactical sanction should they invade.
I m surprised Ukraine and their allies dont lock the border with russia and cut ties with Putin.
The US is unlikely to intervene militarily. After 20 years of Middle Eastern conflicts, the society is dead set against any new wars that don’t have a clear reason to be fought. And the biggest, most urgent, fastest growing threat is China, not Russia.
The Western Europe also does not have the political will to fight, and on top of that, it doesn’t really have armed forces capable of a full scale sustained conflict in Europe against a large modern military with advanced air defense capabilities and shit ton of missiles. Even without that conflict turning nuclear, there’s a guarantee of very significant casualties on both sides. Which would do wonders for public support in no time. And again, Europe doesn’t really have a military. Remember the glorious Libyan campaign of 2013 ?
There are real economic sanctions, that would hurt the Russian ruling class. Sanctions against Russian oligarchs and bureaucrats and Putin’s cronies. Threaten to take away their Western bank deposits, their properties in Chelsea and Miami, their wealth, and see the support for Putin evaporate very quickly. But this is very unlikely to happen on the scale necessary for it to work – these assets are protected by laws, it would require quite an undertaking, and there’s enough people in the West that have vested interest in these assets and would fight tooth and nail to prevent this from happening.
So, the biggest hope is that Putin is just making a show of force to apply pressure to the West and force negotiations and some concessions.
Otherwise, he may be prepared to invade & create a land corridor from Novorossya to Crimea.
Either way, “significant and severe” is more likely to describe the indigestion that Biden and Macron would get from this.
Nato is gonna say “no please dont do it” like they did in 2014
Sanctions…wow, just wow…
Didn’t China and Russia meet up in November?
I wouldn’t be surprised if there was a joint effort in invasions e.g Russia invades Ukraine, and China invades Taiwan at the same time, as a sort of fuck you west what you going to do now…
To bad Russia sits on the gas we need.. those sanctions won’t do shit til we sort our own energy and of course Russia knows it that’s why they have their chance right now to claim Ukraine
Ah the cold war playbook
1. Make a provocative move against the “enemy” (most of the time to deflect from internal unrest
2. Have a big mouth against each other and show you are strong leader.
3. Let a small European country interver and organise talks (Sweden, Swiss, Finland.
4. Meet and agree to sign some treaty later
5. Sign some empty treaty
6. Use this for internal politcal use to show you are strong leader and you can force to enemy to negoitate.
7. Profit
If Russia makes their invasion so obvious that the US and Europe have to try sanctions then Russia will just turn off the gas supply in response.
Putin doesn’t care, he’ll be holding land lol. It’s basically just a purchase fee.
Let them take it. Its not our fucking problem
So there goes Czhechoslovakia. Who’s next? Anschluss of Belarus? Finland? What kind of sanctions then? Freeze Nord Stream 2 for two years, send a few angry tweets and then back to normal? Where is the point you say no and how do you draw the line after you’ve already systemically failed to do so before.
Peace in our time. The more you appease the bolder they’ll get. History really does repeat itself.
On top of that, there will be a strongly worded letter!
