Hi guys!

My girlfriend is from Poland and i and she have been together for over 4 years now. But i didn’t get to learn Polish properly because we always talked in English and it has worked pretty well so far.

But since i have some time for myself till next year and i really want to surprise her somehow with my improved Polish(I know a bit of everyday Polish dialogues but no more than that), i want to start studying Polish intensively during my timeoff season.

My girlfriend often jokes about how difficult Polish is when compared to English, and also that it is even harder than German. Is the overall Polish grammer system really that difficult to learn for foreigners? I can speak Korean and English, and a bit of German and Russian if someone is curious of what languages i am used to.

ps) I love you guys’ food and most of all, Slaskie local beer 😀

  1. It’s the third hardest language to learn for native English speakers. With your knowledge of some other languages especially Russian and German it will come a bit easier. Polish has one of the hardest gramitical structures with many variations of a word like him or his etc. once u understand that u don’t understand u will start to figure it out lol. Good luck

  2. Naaah, it’s easy. Even children can speak it and children are stupid.

  3. Go for conversational polish – learn simple phrases, use daily together with your girlfriend for reinforcement. Once you have the very simple aspects there go for grammar and ability to read simple texts. You got this – most languages are difficult to learn, you’ll get there in the end =)

  4. Depends on what languages you already know well. If you know any slavic language then it shouldn’t be that hard. If English is your first language and you don’t know any other language, it is extremely hard to get to a decent level at Polish. You need dedication, patience, and a lot of time.

  5. That depends on the level of your Russian, I think. Despite being based on different alphabet, grammar is very similar between the two languages. If you know Russian grammar well, it should come much easier to learn Polish.

  6. depending on what language you know already it can either be a breeze or one of the hardest languages you’ve studied, germanic languages like English don’t help that much but if you already know some slavic then you’ll be able to pick up polish quicker.

learn conversational polish, not whatever crap they teach on duolingo, you’ll just sound like you’re in an interview at all times lmao. try to find classes teaching polish around you or online courses.

Once you have some polish down practice with your girlfriend every day, try to learn a new word everyday too (whether that be through your girlfriend or through a dictionary)

keep practicing and don’t be discouraged! polish may be difficult for beginners but it’s great to see non-native people interested in learning :]

  7. It’s super hard to learn it on native level with all the conjunctions and shit but to learn it on conversational level while making some mistakes that don’t defer from understanding you? It’s not harder that other languages i reckon. Good luck!

  8. I love EasyPolish on youtube, where you can hear and read Polish alongside an English translation. Loved this concept for learning more Polish! Put it to 0.5x speed and pause a lot. Enjoy!

  9. Dude for me to reach A2 was more challenging than my engineer degree, fuck hard but doable, maybe also it was hard for me because I actually dont like this language, I learned it because my wife and kids are polish

  10. What you first need to understand is sentence structure and then the actual words and their contextual variations. That’s the tough part but when you start to grasp that then the rest is easy. Here’s the video explaining polish from the grammar perspective

  11. Don’t worry, most Poles don’t speak proper polish.
    “Se” – Sobie
    “Poszłem” – Poszedłem
Using “gdzie” instead of “dokąd” or “jak” instead of “gdy”.

    and MANY, MANY more.

  12. Speaking is difficult, reading is near impossible.

All the bad/swear words like all other languages is simple.

  13. Not as hard as japanese for sure… You want to comunicate, write or be able to read in polish? Grammar is seriously fucked up, IT may be much easier to just stick to verbal skills, even if youre not 100% correct most people will understend you

  14. If you want to speak polish well
just say kurwa every second word 😉

  15. Imagine hardest language on the Earth. Polish is 10 Times harder

  16. W Szczebrzeszynie chrząszcz brzmi w trzcinie, repeat this couple hundred of times until you can say it normally and then move on

  17. my english is not so good as i wan t, if you want, we could together speak every day ten min in english and ten in polish

  18. i could speak polish since i was a kid
but i couldn’t do push ups then
so most probably if you can do a push up
    you can easily learn polish

  19. Depends what your native language is. As a native English speaker I find it fairly difficult.

  20. If you have the time and can afford to send it learning… Why not becoming a neurosurgeon? That’s easier.

  21. It’s very hard for non Slavic speakers and it’s not easy for Poles. An average age of fluency and complete understanding of all grammatical structures is 16 for Poles, while for English kids it’s only 13.
