I was looking up what raithin means, found in an interview of Qxir’s Irish People Terrified of Fairies video…but found this website that appears to be wonderfully detailed records of personal memories & recountings of folklore and social life? It describes a 3 mile long tunnel, curious about the origin.

*This underground passage crosses under the public road at “Leary’s height” and when travelling by car the empty sound underneath may be easily noticed. The whole length of the passage is about three miles. The lios or liosbáibe is used as a burial place for babies.*

oh, anyone know what is a raithin in terms of the supernatural?

  1. Looks like the description is part of the folklore collection undertaken in the 1930s, all National Schools were asked to take part, some were written by pupils, some by the teachers. I thought at first it was a description of a souterrain, usually a medieval underground storage area but the tunnel described is much larger.
Might be worth a look on the Ordnance Survey map site and check the historic layers, fascinating account by the way!
