The Big Issue halts bike rental scheme in Bristol due to vandalism

  1. What the hell is wrong with British people?

I remember heading over to Australia for a year. The parks there have public electric BBQ grills. Free for anyone to use.

I couldn’t quite believe it. Back home they’d be either torn apart, strewn with rubbish, or stuck with bits of burnt on meat, forever.

  2. It’s a bit broken window theory, but Bristol generally tolerates a higher level of anti-social behaviour than many other cities in pursuit of having an artsy/quirky/hippy vibe.

I do get the feeling that if the police made any effort to stamp out this sort of vandalism there’d be immediate protests about heavy handed policing.

  3. While this is obviously a problem the bikes themselves are dangerous. I feel much safer riding the e-scooters about the place than these heavy bikes with bad brakes.

  4. I don’t get why it’s a surprise or why they didn’t foresee this, they tried 5 years back with Yo Bike to do the same thing, bikes got trashed, thrown in the river, one even allegedly ended up somewhere in West Africa.

  5. Kinda makes you wonder who they intended as clientele when you learn the cost of membership and hire. They never stood a chance with the alternative options being much cheaper.
