Labour sets out plan to link minimum wage to cost of living

  1. I can get behind this proposal.

I suppose this is the strength of Labour where its front bench is a bit lacklustre in person. They’ve got a good idea of what the country needs and work together to make policy around it.

It’s just the presentation that they’re a bit shit on, unfortunately.

EDIT: Though admittedly I’d prefer some more lefter wing policies than they’re currently putting out.

  2. Doesn’t guaranteeing to increase the minimum wage by the cost of living mean that you also need to increase the wages of those jobs paid above the minimum wage by similar amounts?

  3. This seems very necessary.

If society has agreed on the bare minimum that it’s reasonable to pay for someone else’s labour then it seems obscene to allow employers to pay less than that simply because inflation has given them the opportunity to do so by keeping their wages the same in nominal terms.

It also stands to reason that the lowest paid workers are the least able to afford to shoulder the costs of inflation. But for some reason we seem to have a Government that thinks it’s fine to ask the poorest households to pay £3,500, £4,000 or more for their energy bills so that the wealthiest can be insulated from the costs of our current crisis.

  4. I’ve never really understood why they aren’t the same thing. It’s just inviting poverty otherwise isn’t it?

  5. Just pushes more people into the minimum wage. Or the higher wage moves relative to it so it ends up making no difference.

  6. I know it’s a sin to criticise anything Labour around these parts but this really is a terrible, terrible idea and can’t be more than a sound bite.

Do we really think that people £1, £2, £3.. above minimum wage are going to get comparable rises? No they’ll just inevitably end up on minimum wage.

This would undoubtedly lead to hyperinflation and potentially job losses.

  7. This. It’s crazy that people who are in work have to get UC to live. That’s essentially a subsidy for greedy corporations that don’t contribute back (as they tend to avoid paying taxes through creative accounting).

Minimum wage should be substantially higher, but I would also like it to be somewhat tied to profits as well (base liveable minimum wage + % of profit), so that the big corporation has lower pressure on maximising profit to pay off shareholders.

They should also scrap IR35, so that smaller businesses can regain access to flexible workforce (the claimed tax avoidance in that space is largely a myth – the real reason was to shift profits from small businesses to large agencies – that happen to be connected to Tories and to remove competition for Infosys and the likes).

People should be able to start their own businesses if they can’t find a job they are looking for.
