I’m just old enough to be able to remember Europe when it was divided. The transition this past few decades has been remarkable. RIP Gorbie, for your role in ending all that.
Reminder that he isn’t liked in a lot of post-soviet states because of bloody crackdowns on independence movements (“January events” in Lithuania and Azerbaijan, “The Barricades” in Latvia) and delusional insistence that USSR was a good thing worth preserving.
You know, over here we rant often in regards “so WHY did we have to break up with a war, look at how the Czech and Slovaks did it and they’re best friends today, hell even USSR broke peacefully…!”
It turns that war between former Soviet republics was just delayed, and for all his faults Gorbachev was among the most responsible for the peaceful break. Now he died in deep old age, watching how clowns after him pissed on everything he tried to do.
I hope he will be buried in Germany.
Ngl, I wonder what he honestly (behind the cameras) thought of russia in the last decade.
Maybe it was indifference or it was infuriating to watch russia just going back to square 1.
He was only one that could out pizza the Hut. RIP
May God have mercy on his soul. Must be pretty horrible to die seeing that your legacy is being destroyed.
One of the most likable personas in our history among leaders of whom we have preserved and reliable records. I predict there’ll be weeks of debating his political moves, how symbolic his death is this year and demonisation of him by our governmental medias. Gorbachev started his term seeing divided Europe, talked of a common European home and did a lot to bring it together but by 2022 you can say that his dream hasn’t been fulfilled.
May God have mercy on his soul. His was an unfortunate leadership, but I think we can all agree that his failure was a success for Europe.
While citizens of the former Eastern Block may dislike him, he will always be remembered very positively here in Germany. After all, it was his policies that led to the reunification of our country.
he’s the one who gave a democratic foundation to the ussr in 1989 when the baltics in particular elected separatist governments.
he brought freedom of press and gatherings in our country
yes he wanted to save it as Swiss-like confederation hence the new Union project but when it failed he recognised the independence of the baltics
others have deserted him. with a swiss like union and the steady transition to the market instead of shock therapy imposed by yeltsin and the us, the new union would be democratic and likely with association with the eu
shame on those who did not allow him to lead us all to true democracy
“He might not have wanted it to happen, but it was in large part thanks to his incompetence that the Soviet Union broke up and the prison of nations disappeared for good.

Putin will never be able to rebuild it.”
