Do the speed cams even work?

  1. Hi, I’m traveling through the Peloponnesos with a rental car and I pass these speed cams a few times. (Picture is from Google, I don’t use my phone while driving) I drove past one with 120 (on a 70 road) and it did not flash. Do they work? Or just don’t flash?

    Edit: source of picture

  2. Greece is very selective when it goes to policing roads. They may leave you alone for months, and then to set up roadblocks to catch everyone for the next 10 minutes at the spot.

  3. They work since now you are concerned and probably wont speed any more. On a true note, they mostly don’t. I would say that a clear 90-95%, if not more, are not operative.

  4. I may admit that some do work and some don’t. One time I have an uncle who got caught driving twice the speed limit from the national road to Athens and we saw the picture come up to his speeding case. But I can safely say the only main concern is seeing police cars standing by on the side with a handheld speedometer aiming at you and or on a tripod.

  5. This is just the cage . They have cameras and change them from one cage to an other.

+ There is no way of knowing if there is a camera there or not .

+ They do not check only speed, but Laning as well.

+ There is a mercy margin at speed . If there is let’s say 70 limit the bill will come if you go 90++ ofc that’s depends on the officers goodwill.

The bills get mailed months later that most possible the camera have been changed to prevent destruction from hot-headed.

  6. That thing has been around since the Peloponnesian war. Rumour has it Pericles himself was fined by that camera.

  7. Usually we paint the cams so they won’t work. It has to be very new to be able to catch the drivers.

  8. i’ve seen signs that displayed your speed and told you to slow down… the cameras do work, sometimes, they just don’t really care for all of them to work, it’s mostly about the psychological “there’s a camera ahead and it *might* work”

  9. At my town they dont for sure..almost all speed cams have been shooting targets from locals..shotgun, pistols even AR bullets holes in them..

  10. Those work, but usually only trigger when you are way above the limit, like 50km/h above. The square ones don’t work.

  11. In my home town there’s three of them in various spots but they never seem to work, so I asked a friend of mine whose dad is a cop and he told me that because the cameras inside are too expensive, they only have one and randomly decide in which housing to put it every now and then and always for a short time so that it doesn’t get destroyed

  12. Yes, but also no. People do get speeding tickets from cameras in general but they’re definitely not on all the time since people regularly speed past them but not everyone gets tickets. My understanding is that they’re activated every now and then. I don’t really know why but then again I’ve stopped expecting any sort of common sense from government agencies.
