Just curious — is there anything EU related Hungary supports?
As far as I know this has to do with the same reasoning that the Swiss also refuse. I know Switzerland isn’t in the EU but they had a referendum on the subject and the majority voted against a minimum wage.
Of course, it is embarrassing for Hungary to find itself on the same side of an issue as the racist Frederiksen government in Denmark, the first country in Europe in our time to introduce separate legislation that applies only to stigmatised minorities (the so-called Ghetto laws), something which has not been seen in Europe since the German anti-Jewish laws of the 1930s/1940s.
So the law went through 23 in favor to 2 against. That’s more decisive than I would have anticipated.

To be fair, in Denmark there is no minimum wage by law, but everything is negotiated by very strong unions. It’s the same thing when Americans use Denmark as an example of rich western country without a minimum wage law, not understanding we have de-facto minimum wage (mostly) through unions
There should be some sort of prize for being on the same side of a vote with only Orban backing you.
Maybe, a dunce cap?
The thing people fail to realise is that this minimum wage won’t fix a damn thing for anyone in the EU.
Nobody will be richer.
Good! Minimum wage is stupid. All it does is set a bar under which you can’t work.
I mean it’s pretty stupid to think that workers who are now working under minimum wage would all get paid minimum wage. Sure, some will actually get a little more money, but the ones who are making way under the min wage will simply make 0 income instead of the little they made.
Socialism – making people poor since very long ago.
This is a classic example of something that The EU should just stay out of, theres no value added by deciding something like this at EU level. Not to mention the huge potential for fuck ups as you try to regulate and large and diverse economy from Brussels.
Im just going to out on a limb and guess theres no real EU initiative to do this to begin with. Someone said somethng somewhere? Explored as an option in some whitepaper?
Denmark needs an opt out from any more opt outs
Good on Denmark for defending its strong unions
Denmark like other Scandinavian countries has good reason not to have a minimum wage though because it’s basically redundant due to its strong unions. Hungary is another matter.
