The UK education system preserves inequality – new report

  1. And it completely fails to acknowledge what the real problem is, instead just blaming the schools, as per. The real issue is the continued and ruthless cutting of social services and care, which has disproportionally affected poorer communities.

The problem isn’t schools in disadvantaged areas not being good enough, it’s the fact that schools in those areas have to pick up a much higher proportion of social care issues that act as barriers to education. A child isn’t going to be able to learn about multiplication properly if they haven’t had breakfast, the young carer trying to get by with no support isn’t going to be too focused on grammar, the kid fleeing an abusive parental situation isn’t thinking about the Romans.

I’ve taught more than enough children that come from shit situations. Most days we’re just trying our best to give them somewhere where they’re safe and happy, knowing that learning is a welcome bonus.

EDIT: It’s also a night odd coincidence that this article comes out as we get closer to teaching unions starting to ballot for strike action…
