Small businesses will begoing to the wall with these power costs

  1. Like, how does that happen? It seems to be an absolutely massive amount of energy being used in that kind of business – and the fact that they’re shocked by it suggests they weren’t aware of their usage?

They were apparently moved to EI after their old provider exited the market. I presume that was Iberdrola and they were moved on to a variable rate tariff and didn’t sign up to a price plan.

  2. Something dosent add up.

Average cost per unit electricity is probably currently at about 35c/kWh incl VAT

€9836 equates to about 28,000 kWh

The billing period is 73 days. Assuming they close on a Sunday, let’s say they were open for 60 days.

28,000kWh over 60 days is a massive 465kWh per day usage.

Assuming they’re open for 10 hours a day, that’s equivalent to a constant usage of 47kW

For a small cafe, that’s crazy. The maximum total **peak** load from a house would be about 12kW, and that’s having the heating on, electric showers running, washing machine on, dishwasher on. All at the same time.

I can’t see how a small cafe could ever have an average and consistent electrical load during the day of 47kW

  3. Their supplier left the market and they were moved onto a standard tarrif, which is always the most expensive.

Its still bananas, bit its a bit of an anomaly.

  4. “Your last bill: None”

Clearly something fucked up here and there’s been no bill paid here for a long time or the bill is wrong.

At a unit rate of 31c, this bill works out at 31.732 megawatt-hours of electricity in 73 days.

That’s about half a Megawatt per day or an average of 20kW every hour of every day. Your typical espresso machine is typically about 5kW. So that’s 4 of them running constantly, making 12 cups of coffee, 24 hours a day.

    Yeah.

So something else has happened here, but let’s not let facts and reason get in the way of a good rant about energy prices.

Edit: She says that she was with Iberdrola until they ceased trading and was automatically rolled over to Electric Ireland and this is their first bill from EI. So yeah, the bill is wrong. Clearly.

  5. Has to be a mistake

I know the cafe,it’s not big maybe seating for 50 and I don’t think they open long hours and didn’t open Sundays either.

  6. I live in a tiny flat just two rooms don’t use the heating or any hot water and our bill was still super high!?

  7. Maybe previous meter readings were estimated, probably underestimated, this bill is now based on a meter reading.

So could be a huge underestimate. My last office bill was based on a reading, but the previous couple were estimated. My last bill was €600 more than average because of it

I’d like to see the back of that page to see the breakdown

  8. They need to sell like 70 coffees a day to break even presuming they sell for €3 and cost them €1 outside of the electricity. That’s definitely not gonna go well 😥

  9. Maybe the meter hadn’t been read in awhile and they’d been getting estimated bills for ages that were lower than what they should’ve been?

  10. Even if this bill was rectified to half that is still extortionate for 73 days , how the hell are small business meant to cope with the cost of living and people choosing to stay in and cook , nobody including myself (working class)at the moment can afford these luxuries anymore , it’s stay in keep the home warm and clean clothes on our backs because you can guarantee these restaurants and cafés will certainly be upping the prices to make ends meet and who can blame them ;((

  11. The government do not give a fuckkkkkkk anymore. Fuck all of you small people and even smaller businesses….

  12. Been saying it for a while, Irelands energy prices are likely to go as vad as the UK is predicted to, but absolutely no one in Ireland is talking about it, so it seems people are going to be less prepared.

  13. They’ve been underestimated for ages and then someone’s been to read the meter and the difference between the two reads is what they owe for what they used. There’s no escaping that. That’s why it’s actually better to be overestimated, because those can be amended.

  14. Hard to believe this isn’t a mistake, either way the Ukrainian flag in the profile of the woman is relevant.

Higher energy prices are the immediate consequence of EU sanctions on Russia. By all means support Ukraine, but no one should kid themselves about what that entails.

  15. If we assume the cafe is running 12h/day and the power costs 0,50€/kWh, then we get to around 20kW that are used per hour.

An air conditioning can use 500-4000W.

A small commercial fridge might also use anywhere between 500-1000W. (But that would also be running constantly.)

If they don’t use LED lights, that can add up from a few hundred up to 1000W.

Their boiler might also be electrical. Depends on the water usage, but I’d think they have to wash the dishes often (or have a dishwasher running a lot). That’s another 1000-2500W.

The coffee machines run with 750-1200W.

    Etc.

Stuff like that adds up fast.

  16. Without seen the other half of the bill it’s out of context.

The bill could of being estimated for years.

They could of left a radiator on permanently. The bill covers a period before price hikes.

I’m an energy manager and see stuff like this happen the whole time

9836/.27 cent a unit = 36,447 kwh /76/24= a Constant load of 20kw. The place is definitely only telling a half truth.

  17. Coffee €50

    Muffin €25

Wonder does Leo have a funny movie quote lined up that he will stealthily put into the cost of living speech he will enviably make when Taoiseach?

  18. Coffee shop, so your running a coffee machine which is basically a kettle all day. Makes sense that you can consume soo many units.
Add in aircon to deal with the heat the coffee machine is making and youve an infinite heating and cooling cycle.

Unit cost is probably only going up from here…

  19. We have record high employment right now. I expect record unemployment in the next 12 months if this isn’t sorted at the EU level. Energy must be nationalised.

  20. There are some that were trolling this person on Twitter saying that since she has an Ukrainian flag she should be OK with the increase in price because it’s all in the name of fighting Putin.

It seems people still don’t understand that even if the war hadn’t broken out we’d still be in this mess thanks to COVID-19 disruptions to the oil industry and more than a decade of European governments pretending that flakey renewable energy sources were production-ready to replace conventional energy sources.

Meanwhile, [Belgium is moving forward with shutting down 6 nuclear plants](https://twitter.com/mboudry/status/1564593020888129538) even though their citizens are facing the same sort of energy cost crisis. Don’t tell me this is about the war in Ukraine: this is a war on the lower and middle class by the global elite.

  21. Something is fucky.

    – The period is more than the usual 60 days.

    – There is no previous bill.

This isn’t a typical bill for this person and we are only being shown enough to generate outrage. It’s suspicious.
