Interesting that the IT are framing this as a reorientation
>If adopted, the policies could represent a significant reorientation of the system towards taxing wealth rather than focusing more on income.
Moving away from taxing work and towards taxing wealth would be positive. Will be interesting to see what the report actually says when it’s published.
It’d be great if you could leave a house deposit or house to each child then the rest went to the people of your country. It would promote an ideal where you planned for the future of your countries children instead if just your own.
Would corruption and pollution and all sorts of bad morales happen if the people you were exploiting were going to get the money you made from it?
I suppose its a thought that people may only be as corrupt up to a point of one house for each child.
You might say what are the motivations for people to work harder if they can’t amass a fortune, I’d say why should people work harder. Somebody else will work enough to get a house for each child. Then somebody else will. People think a fella importing fridge gas and dumping old fridge gas into the ozone layer on the sly is some sort of genius hard worker who we need to do all the hard work for us. That stupid old school religion train of thought.
Inheritance tax is the biggest load of BS. You work, it’s taxed, you save it, it’s taxed and then you want to leave your house to your kids and it’s taxed.
We should have a higher property tax on second homes and holiday homes.
Inheritance tax is one last chance to rob the grave.
Inheritance tax shouldn’t even exist. What a world we live in.
A lot of vague wording in the article, nothing concrete in it at all. Based on interactions I had over the past few years I fully support a higher inheritance tax with a fair threshold.
Families with money always find ways to transfer wealth down to their kids. Always. But stuff like the ‘fair deal’ on nursing home care should play a part as well. Parents should be setting arrangements while they are alive.
I think there should be no inheritance tax on the family home especially as the wealthy are able to avoid death taxes anyway. Focus more on taxing them in their lifetimes.
We’re all out of ideas for a new fair tax initiatives
€300k General secretary: *What if… we just increase current taxes.*
Brilliant idea, that’s why we pay you the big bucks.
Inheritance tax should be easily twice what it is at the moment.
Inheritance tax is total BS.
The person already paid their dues and now you are charging taxes again on the same thing? fuck off
Jaysus the only hope left I have is when the aul pair go that the little bit of inheritance might be enough to help me secure a home as my salary won’t be enough.
Now the pricks want to marginalise that option too.
Next they’ll want to tax the end of my tea.
People seem to be really struggling with the idea of taxing inherited wealth. If it was done at marginal rates it could target the super rich more than those hoping to put a permanent roof over their heads.
I don’t like my parents earnings being diminished as much as the next guy, but the vast amounts of wealth hoarded across generations in certain families is seemingly untouchable. And how often do spoiled dickheads get born into wealth and entitlement? Surely reducing this while increasing the tax pool would benefit the majority of people?
The same with wealth and property taxes, it needs to be designed so it targets the disgustingly rich more than the middle income earners.
Aight, so we’ve got the owning nothing part, where does the happiness part come in?
I refuse to believe they will administer inheritance tax in a way that will only affect the super wealthy and will allow working and middle class families to pass on their family homes to their children without penalty.
Without a doubt this will screw over regular people if implemented.
This is useless without decreasing income taxes.
Inheritances originally generated by income earned has already been taxed.
As if we needed more taxes ffs
Taxing wealth makes way more sense than taxing income. If someone starts with 7 million dollars, but makes €25k a year they are still way better off than someone who started out with nothing (which typically means starting out in debt for all intents and purposes) who makes €100k a year.
Weird how everyone assumes that taxes only ever go up when they’ve been cut every year for most of the last decade
Had to pay property tax and Stamp duty this year, It’s like they want to punish people for trying to look after their future.
All you people agreeing with inheritance tax aren’t volunteering any money away now….
