I worked for BP for 30 years – the energy sector has become incompetent and greedy | Nick Butler

  1. Works for BP for 30 years, only now thinks that they’re greedy? They’ve been greedy from the start.

Also, competence is in the eye of the beholder. I’m sure shareholders enjoying massive profits consider the energy extraction companies to be very competent atm.

Other than that, the article itself and the proposals he makes are great.

  2. The issue with private companies, especially those providing fundamental services, has always been their reluctance to acknowledge their social responsibilities. They have a responsibility to shareholders and themselves, but not it seems the customer…although when it comes to water and energy, surely we are citizens, not customers!

  3. Has become incompetent and greedy? I’ve been consulting in the sector about as long and I can’t remember a time when they weren’t incompetent and greedy.

  4. Another Prodigal Capitalist.

“Everything was apparently OK with me while I pulled down a massive salary and bonus as a senior executive with a shit company. But now I’ve vested all my stock options and left, suddenly I’ve realised how terrible it all was! And this is in no way related to me whoring myself publicly in my new position.”

Almost as obnoxious as the Prodigal Tech Bros oozing their way out of Facebook/Amazon/Google.

  5. Happy to blame anyone but BP (and other oil and gas producers) of course. It’s a headline to get clicks, but the article includes direct criticism of pretty much everyone else in the energy industry but lacks any area where BP has acted incompetently or greedily.

I see blame for (single example for each):

Ofgem – “The honourable resignation of Ofgem board member Christine Farnish will not be the last departure from an organisation that has lost its way.”

Energy retailers – “should be required to demonstrate they are supporting those in need, not least by ending the pernicious extra charges imposed for those using pre-payment meters.”

Nuclear and renewable – “There is, for instance, no reason why the producers of power from nuclear or renewable sources in the UK should be taking advantage of a price cap dominated by the wholesale price of natural gas”

Government – “Ministers seem not to realise that if countries such as France and Norway limit supplies to the UK this winter in order to meet their own needs”
