Union boss Mick Lynch warns rail strikes could go on ‘indefinitely’

  1. Good and it’s on us to make sure that they can strike by voting out this absolutely fucking awful government.

  2. What these workers are asking for is extremely reasonable.

The reason why these strikes might go on for longer is because the Government and the rail companies are choosing intransigence. They are choosing for us to be massively inconvenienced because the alternative is to pay the workers properly.

If the figures we’re hearing about how much these strikes are costing the economy are true it would be much, much cheaper just to pay the workers. This isn’t about saving money or about running an efficient service, it’s about trying to enact a real terms pay cut because they *want* to cut workers’ pay.

If you’re inconvenienced over the next few days just remember that Shapps, Johnson, Sunak and Truss have chosen to fuck you over.

  3. Is there a strike fund for the workers? Long strikes are tough on individuals finances. Maybe the RMT should set up a go fund me

  4. A friend working for Network Rail told me the terms of the new contract they are tried to lay on them, along with a low payrise and staff cuts and job redefinition. It’s a bag of shite, and at the same time contractors doing the same job are being paid thousands more, I can’t blame them to be honest.

  5. Which Liz Truss hopes will happen so she can repeatly live out her fantasies of crushing striking peons and attempt to be the new thatcher at the cost of everything.

  6. Trains are a luxury for anyone who doesn’t live in London. Shite service, hopefully this drives some change. I suspect it will only make them even more expensive though.

  7. To be fair, Arriva NW have just been on an idefinite strike for a month, and they have gotten the full payrise they were demanding for.

    It’s inconvenient, but it works.

  8. Ultimately the people the RMT are negotiating with don’t have the power to meet their demands. Those that do (the Transport Secretary Grant Shapps) refuses to meet with them.

I wouldn’t be surprised if there is some sort of state of emergency declared when Truss gets in.

Emergency budget for “cost-of-living” which will ultimately cut tax for the rich.

Emergency powers to curb-stomp unions and their ability to call strikes.

Roll-back on carbon targets and the reopening of coal-fire power stations couple with rolling winter blackouts touted as “energy saving measures” or some shit.

  9. Every experience I’ve ever had with rail has been shit. Every person I have ever interacted with (albeit rarely) has equally been shit. Rather than go down the rabbit hole here, who is it thats advocating for things to stay shit, the bosses or the staff? Because whoever wants things to stay how they are are the ones I don’t support.

  10. Take this with a degree of scepticism but talking to someone higher up where I work, I’ve been told that Shapps has told TOC bosses that they’re not allowed to give any offer or negotiate in any way.

They government want to scale back the railways and not allowing any negotiations means they will eventually get their way. This is not about pay. This is about safety.

Removing the guard from the train is questionable (I can give a long list on why they should stay on the train) and scaling back your maintenance teams will only lead to Hatfield and Potters Bar happening again.

  11. To be honest for the government they don’t give a shit. If they just wait it out they’ll they can still shut the ticket offices, roll out ticket machines and make people redundant instead of reskilling the workers anyway.

  12. I’m starting to get the feeling the Tories aren’t the only ones itching for a fight here. Mick Lynch has turned into a big celebrity that perpetually online lefties like the Corbyn cult have latched on to as the next big ‘leader’ of the Left. I wouldn’t be surprised if he has plans to launch his own political party as a left-wing Farage.

Either way he shouldn’t take public sympathy for granted because it won’t last forever.
