Hello! I’m sorry, I do not speak Portuguese! I’m hoping someone here will be able to help in identifying this Portuguese military uniform and provide any information about rank and branch (navy, army, air force). Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you so much!
Username…?
It is army and soldier rank the lowest…. sorry
The year is 1948
The white gaiters are throwing me off. Any idea what year this was taken?
Anyway it’s either from airborne troops (part of the ~~army~~ Air force at the time) or from GNR, a civil police force but with military equivalence (its a weird one I know and nothing related to MP’s)
Edit: it was part of air force and not the army.
It definitely looks like the uniform the army used post-WW2. It doesn’t look like he has any rank insignia on his uniform, meaning he could’ve been only a private.
He was a common soldier, because he isn’t wearing the officer’s uniform or boots.
He also doesn’t seem to have his insignia patch imposed on him, so it was probably taken during basic training.
You can check his branch if you can see what pin he has on his Boina (hat). If it’s 2 crossed rifles, it’s common infantry. Doesn’t she has the pin somewhere or is it visible in the actual picture?
If she knows his name, and his parents name and place of birth (easy to get in any Portuguese embassy), she can ask the Arquivo Geral do Exército to find out what he did in the army and where he was stationed, any medal’s he eventually got etc. The ultramar war only start’s in the 60s with the invasion of Goa, so he probably didn’t saw any action.

I’ve found a Portuguese news article regarding the new army uniforms ( https://www.dn.pt/poder/amp/cinzento-perdido-nos-anos-1960-regressa-com-novas-fardas-do-exercito-11445131.html ) and in the first pictures that show up, if you swipe right you’ll find a drawing of a soldier with 1948 below, and in the description is “Army uniform after the end of the second war”
Rank: Capitão Gato!
Branch: Lock your daughters brigade!
It’s the post WW2 Army uniform.

If you want to find out, check https://ahm-exercito.defesa.gov.pt/ or https://ahmgermil-exercito.defesa.gov.pt/ to see if he’s there. If not, send an email with name, birth place and date of birth and the picture and they might be able to help you.
