Family build makeshift tent for 87-year-old during 15-hour ambulance wait

  1. People don’t realize but every part of the NHS is buckling.

Dentistry collapsed years ago and no one seemed to care. So the Tories have gone right on with mismanagement and privatization.

The ambulance service, despite hardworking, specialist, and dedicated staff cannot cope.

Hospitals don’t have enough beds because they gutted social services and nursing homes so they can’t release elderly patients in good time.

Practically every department is understaffed but can’t offer more positions because they don’t have the budget.

Every problem the solution seems to be to privatize, meaning that if the government give them £1000 then only £700 gets spent because the rest has to go to shareholders.

Then again what do we expect from a party who privatised hospital car parks because they’re too complicated for them to run.

  2. People care just not enough to do anything than moan on Facebook, plus the whole nation could kick off but nothing would happen, the whole country was pissed off at P&O and nothing was done about that

  3. Unfortunately these stories will keep happening, get more frequent, and cost people their lives, unless this country massively reinvests in social care to the point that bed-blocking in hospitals is no longer an issue.

The other problem is that most social care is privately run, at a profit. When the local authority go out to tender for social services, the race is always to the bottom and the service suffers. Staff turnover is ridiculous in the care industry – it causes issues that have been widely publicized like employees deliberately missing bookings because its too far for them to go and they dont get paid travel etc.

So until these services are totally nationally provided and not run by private firms, I don’t see how this twin set of problems resolves itself.

  4. Unfortunately the UK seems to be in a downward spiral of tax cuts and privatisations until it ends up as a mini-US. Low taxes, zero public services and the population just mindless cows to be milked by the corporations.

Labour are too scared to propose anything that might look like it’s for the common good, because people get angry at the thought of other people getting something for nothing. They would rather die on a waiting list than risk somebody undeserving getting free healthcare, or god forbid an asylum seeker getting a handout.

The UK is currently a nation of spite and envy – it really isn’t going to end well.

  5. Maybe the government could bung this family a few million pounds to make thousands of these shelters to put near the hospitals? Then hospitals can discharge “bed blockers” into them. Freeing up beds for new patients, and stopping this A&E crisis in one profitable swoop.

Oh wait, none of this family went to Eton. Nevermind.
