Can you imagine if the same were said for any rock festival?
Edit: Rather unsurprisingly, Redditors are looking for an exact replica – this is the only high profile event in the UK which celebrates West Indian culture. There isn’t a multitude of them; would be a travesty if it closed. But much more needs to be done about security and safety.
Edit 2: as u/WonderEducational694 points out the issue with crime is that it’s an unregulated event. Perhaps ticketing is the answer for prevention?
Happens every year. Nothing will change because it’s too loaded a thing.
I don’t think it should be banned/discontinued, but if ramming it down my throat about how great an event it is could cease, when all this always goes on, that would be sufficient.

There are about 2 murders a week in London anyway, and around 11000 knife crimes a year. Chances are there would be as many if carnival didn’t happen, just spread over a larger area.
Guess this is a nice distraction to get everyone divided again.
Less drugs and sexual assaults than parliment though…
Went there once in the 80’s and got robbed. Would not recommend anybody going there.
Pretty idiotic to jump to banning a carnival rather than say policing it better or tackling the core problems.

Turn it into a proper event then. Take it off the street, control entrances with searches just like any other mass gathering.

I was there for the first time on Monday and had a lovely experience, great atmosphere and friendly people. Was it me being lucky or does it usually happen at specific times and places (e.g late at night)?

It’s probably going to take a tragedy for anything to be done, it’s too much of a political hot potato. A large scale crushing incident, the death of a child or a full scale riot breaking out are about the level.
For fuck’s sake, given the size of the gathering (one of, if not the largest, in Europe) the rate of crime is fantastically low. There are literally higher rates of death, assault, sexual violence and drug use at most other major festivals in the country.
This is an absolute load of bollox , I mean yes it is a tragedy that someone lost their life but all things considered 2 million people attend carnival and for the most part people go and have fun and leave peacefully , this article seems loaded and biased . It doesn’t even go on for three days either ??? Who ever wrote the article has clearly never been. I do the sound system on one of the floats and it’s smiles all around including the police who do a great job of keeping things running smoothly. You will never stop carnival !!!
I say move it to Hyde Park, make it a ticketed event to pay for the policing and security. Scan photo Id on entry like a night club. Knife arches and searches as a condition of entry.

It’s a fun thing but it’s the only place I’ve ever been punched because I’m white. Now I’m not racist and this hasn’t changed my mind but I was hit from behind by a young black guy who was with a gang of around 5 others. They all laughed and frankly I was in no position to do anything other than to suck it up and move me and my slightly scared g/f away as quick as possible. The crush is high at times and walking is very slow along the route.
I think I was attacked because I was white but all that told me was that there are dicks in every race.
I probably wouldn’t go to the carnival again which is sad as it’s a fantastic thing to see.

This argument is so stupid. I don’t like football and I despise some of the culture surrounding it. But I would never advocate for it to be banned. It provides real joy and pleasure to a great number of people.
Why do people want to take our music away? Get stuffed.
Only been twice. First time was robbed at knife point. Second time one of the girls in our group was sexually assaulted in the queue for food. Noe of the other women present said a word (out of fear? acceptance?), the guys serving told her to stop screaming as it was “scaring the customers”. The police were useless, the atmosphere the closest I’ve ever come to “Lord of the Flies”. Never again. If people want to go, great, but let’s not pretend it’s something that it’s not.
Get hundreds of thousands of drunk Londoners on the street and you only get a tiny minority of violence. That’s surely a win lol? Always comes across as anti-London/anti-Black when I see this stuff. All the people I see up in arms are Middle Englanders who actively despise London and the cultures therein. I guarantee the people calling for it to be scrapped have never even been invited to go.
Racially motivated, this happens at every major festival doesn’t it yet I don’t see calls for every festival to be scrapped.

Just wondering- Are those naysayers going to call for an end to Leeds festival or Reading or Glastonbury?. People have died there to, as well as the numerous sexual assaults reported across all of those festivals that involve way less people. NH police did a great job this year and this will continue, probably long after some of you have shuffled off this mortal coil.
Going straight to cancelling an event because of poor organisation is just plain unfair to those who go to enjoy it. It needs a preemptive response by the government and police next year- Plan for it to go well instead- it’s not as if this hasn’t happened before and there has been no warning- instead of just being lazy and cancelling it.
Simple crowd control measures in place would sort this out

I’ve been going to the carnival for about 15 years now and have never had any trouble not to say it doesn’t happen but it’s always blown out of proportion by the media/ people who don’t go. You have shy of 2 million attending of course you will get some bad people

As does any Bank Holiday. The amount of drunken domestic abuse perpetrated goes through the roof on such days.

The film was never that good. Can’t believe they even made a carnival for that Hugh Grant mediocrity in the first place.
This used to be an event to celebrate West Indian culture but is now just an excuse of the youth of the capital to come together and act like complete cunts. 7 stabbings multiple sexual assaults shops and houses across West London have to be boarded and secured every year at cost to residents who are left with the absolute waste land the next day
Every year NH carnival is on, every year my friends go and say it’ll be fun, then they always come back and say it was horrible and a mess, rinse and repeat.
