Support for Welsh independence is growing – people are fed up with being forgotten

  1. As much as I hate the idea of the UK breaking up it would be kind of hilarious if Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales all left and rejoined the EU, the Tories would go into meltdown trying to explain why England was the only economy that wasn’t growing.

  3. top quality banter would be everyone breaking off from England, then England rejoins the EU. The others won’t get accepted on their own cause they dont have anything to offer lol.

  4. No surprise really. With the increased support for Scottish independence and it becoming clearer than ever that the Tories are taking us all for fools, a nation that has minimal Tory support is never going to want to stay under them. It won’t be easy but it is not like live under the Tories will be either.

  5. Saddest thing if the big breakup happened is that Bojo and co will be too busy enjoying the money made during the pandemic with their friends to even remotely care

  6. And I’m one of them. Absolutely fed up with this one sided Union. The places that seem to benefit is London and the south east. Well, no more!

  7. This is the downside of a Tory Scottish policy platform that amounts to spiting Scots as much as possible to appeal to English nationalists. It might not hurt you in Scotland and it might not hurt you in England but it is pretty transparent elsewhere.

  8. Income tax in Wales generates about £4b.

The NHS budget in Wales is over £8b.

Add on education, infrastructure, social care, welfare and other departmental budgets…

I don’t think those wishing for independence understand just how much (permanent) austerity would be needed for Wales to operate at even a substantial deficit… let alone come close to balancing the books.

  9. This is why i think the uk should federalis if it was divided into more autonomous states then the wealth could be more easily distributed. Just a thought though 🤷‍♂️

  10. I can’t really see it happening, not even Scotland tbh. My take on it is that we don’t live in a real democracy, and the break-up of the UK would weaken the anglosphere from a global perpsective, so every trick and lever will be pulled to make sure it doesn’t happen.

Would be great to escape the Conservative party though.

  11. If you thought brexit is a mess then wait till you see the economic and leglastive calamity that independence would be. Which currency would you use? Would you allow BoE to control your currency? Hard borders? What would be the customs checks? What happens to our vastly integrated armies?

I get the past few governments have been catastrophic in terms of investment and looking after people, but breaking up a historic union of 100s of years because we’ve got some ghouls in government is insane.

  12. Based Cymru.

Since I’m not Welsh, this isn’t my battle and I won’t be wading into the nuances of a debate that Welsh people need to have amongst themselves. It is purely up to those living in Wales and them alone to decide.

The respectful thing is not to inject myself into a debate I don’t belong in, since I don’t live there. I’m sure we all agree…

  13. I don’t understand why certain people, who’re not from Wales/Scotland, are so vehemently opposed to those countries being granted independence.

  14. I am for indepence if anything just for the bargaining power we might gain from this being a strong sentiment. Full independence would be great (maybe, i mean it could be shit) but having a stronger unified welsh voice to demand stuff like more autonomy/devolution would definitely be good.

  15. It’s articles like this which is why I feel there is such a great need for a general election more than ever. There are those that have always argued for Welsh independence. They’ve been a minority in the past, but I can’t deny their movement is growing, even in an area where I am for which Welsh independence would completely screw us over. With the issues happening in Scotland and Ireland, then you do have to wonder what the union will look like in a few years. Personally I don’t think it’s healthy that any of the nations should be considering independence referendums until after a general election. If it goes as the polls are predicting that the tories are kicked out. Then referendums should be postponed while labour fix the mess that the tories have gotten us into. As general anger towards Westminster decreases, then at least it would be possible for us in the nations to have a more rational debate on the subject. But I also fear that it is entirely possible that if England elects Tory rule of the UK again. Then it would appear as a massive F you to Wales, Scotland and Northern Island, and for that I would think it impossible for any of the nations not to want to get away from this mess the government has gotten the UK into

  16. The level of anti-welsh sentiment in these comments is disgusting, some of the key points to address are:

    – To the people saying Wales isn’t a country because the UK is a country, you’re showing your lack of education or research. Wales is a country in the same way that Soctland is a country, and England is a country. The UK is quite unique in this sense, being a country made of countries.

    – Anti-Welsh attitudes and sentiment are more prevalent than people like to admit, and while we all enjoy a bit of banter here and there (thought’s of sheep come to mind) we do not enjoy centuries of being viewed as second class citizens. It’s okay if you don’t believe that fact to be true, but I can assure you the fact that millions of Welsh citizens feel this way did not come from nowhere. Of course it isn’t everyone, I’m Welsh living in England and most people are just normal people, but most people aren’t the ones in power making decisions that affect our country and its people.

    – To those saying that Wales is too poor to be independent, due in part to the budget deficit between government spending and revenue, it would be good to understand that the UK is one of the most indebted countries in the world with a goverment debt of £2.4 trillion, which is pretty much exactly equivocal to UK GDP. A debt level of 100% GDP is nothing to scoff at, though most developed countries run a government deficit. Wales would be no different, but if Wales were to join the EU it’s likely we would once again be a net beneficiary of their funding schemes.

I don’t think independence is the best way forward, I believe the UK was stronger in the EU, and Wales is likely stronger in the UK. However, if years of growing support for independence don’t show the UK government and UK citizens that some serious measures need to be taken to make Wales feel like a valid part of the Union, I worry that this is the path being taken. England relies on Scotland for its power, on Wales for its water, why are Tories so keen to push both away with their rhetoric? A union between nations must be a union by choice, no amount of Tory threats and rhetoric will hold the UK together if their relentless assault on living standards, the rights of the citizens and our position in the world continues.

  17. “Independent Wales” – cue the theme from Curb Your Enthusiasm.

No but seriously, I’m sure the only place where I’ve seen people walking around with face tattoos in the UK will be really successful as an independent country.

  18. It’s weird to me that this sub was overwhelmingly anti-Brexit and we as a nation have learnt that leaving a union is not all bells and whistles, yet now people are pushing for independence in two countires from a union claiming independence will be nothing but bells and whistles.

At the end of the day I live in England so it’s not my choice, I just find the parrallel’s strange.

  19. Can’t we just make London a separate country. Rest of England with the exception of maybe Manchester gets forgotten. Remove London from England and then let each country rule itself

  20. It’s easy to want to rebel, it’s harder dealing with the consequences. I suspect most who are supporting this aren’t quite considering the consequences in as much depth as they should.

  21. Reading through the Guardian comments (sigh)…can we stop this thing of English people saying they have Welsh, Scottish or Irish ancestry so they’re going to change their citizenship because they just ‘don’t feel English’. Newsflash, nearly every English person has ancestry from one of the other home nations and (terrible as it may be), it probably goes the other way round too. We’re basically all cousins, despite some people trying to distance themselves from the stain of being English. Being English doesn’t make you inherently bad and I wish this thing of ‘the Celtic nations’ being full of better people would stop. I see it cropping up more and more, you can’t hide the fact you were born in England and I think it’s not a path we should be going down.

  22. I’m all for Welsh independence. But there are a LOT of English people living in Wales, people who made a killing selling up their overpriced property in SE England to buy up Welsh farms and price out the local population. These same people then voted for Brexit. It’s caused a lot of resentment.

While I can imagine Scotland prospering outside of the UK, I do worry about Wales.

  23. Didn’t Wales vote heavily in favour of Brexit too?

It’s not even remotely similar to Scotland’s situation

  24. If we still had coal and our iron and steelworks I’d say this would be a great idea. But with the idiots running the country now, and our main revenue is shitty factories, we’re on a loser.

  25. Posts like this are peak r/unitedkingdom. We are probably the only national sub on Reddit that actively wants the country to break up and fulfil all the doomongers’ dreams. There really isn’t a paradise on Earth at the moment, so let’s try to work together to make it better rather than dissolve into ever smaller polities.

  26. I’m apathetic at this point. I feel far more connected to my identity as an Englishman than as a Brit. If the rest feel like jogging on and leaving us to it, then sure
