Hey all! We just moved into an older apartment and I noticed this three point wall socket, what exactly is this used for? I have never seen it before. ‘Funny’ enough, some sockets are grounded, some are not.

In any case thanks if anybody knows what this is.

  1. Telephone socket. Depending on where you live and if you’ve upgraded your internet to fiber you might be able to use it, if you get a landline subscription and an old phone.

  2. Regarding the grounding, IIRC back in the day it used to be quite common to only ground kitchen and/or bathroom sockets, and leave the rest ungrounded. They probably didn’t think it was worth it to ground areas where water is not used.

  3. To add to this why don’t Finnish wall sockets have on and off switches? I saw a cleaner lady one time get zapped as she pulled out her vacuum plug from the wall. The wall socket was dodgy looking to be fair but if theyre not off when you pull it ou it’s a bit dangerous right or is there something I am missing?

  4. Until this post I thought everyone uses one of these for their internet 😬 where else would I plug in my modem?

  5. Its an old socket, previously use for telephone, but currently a lot of old apartments use these for broadband internet. Found out the hard way when I moved to a place and couldn’t find the ethernet port for internet. Contacted the internet provider (Telia) and they said that I would need a special router for it to work. Telia sells for 100€ but you can find used ones for half the price on Tori

  6. I moved to a new house in April this year. Telia sent me a modem for my broadband with a three pin adapter that plugs into this socket. It works perfectly. Modem was 70€ from Telia

    Edited for spelling

  7. Telephone Socket for ADSL/ADSL+ or VDSL/xDSL connection. Most apartment houses uses VDSL technology today. Speed should be about 100/50 Mb/s. Special router is required and your internet provider sell them.

  8. How do you feel about this RJ-45 installation? Maybe the cost of wiring was too much to bring it down? On the bright side, it has no connection whatsoever. My VDSL still comes from the three holed mystery socket and I have no idea why the RJ-45 has even been installed. 😀
